Subject: Jack Nicklaus talks about records

This was written in 1973. Notice nobody talked about "Professional
Majors" back then:

=========================

>From PGA.com:

Jack Nicklaus made his 55th PGA Championship memorable for golf
historians, capturing his 14th major championship to eclipse Bobby
Jones' record that had stood for 43 years.

Later, when pressed about edging Jones' standard, Nicklaus said 14
major championship victories "is just a number, and I don't know which
is the better feat, Jones' or mine. It may be better to compare all
records when a person has finished playing... and I'm not done."

Jones's feat was obviously superior, because he didn't know Jack would
come along, and he went through a period from 1931-1971 where he
didn't pay much attention to playing in majors. He was also quoted as
saying that if he had known Jack was going to win six Masters, he
never would have started the damn thing.

Didn't Bobby Jones die before Nicklaus won the 75 and 86 Masters?

How could Jones be quoted on that?

That is what the Boulder Police call a clue.

Jones played in 11 US Opens, winning 4 times.

Jones played in 4 British Opens, winning 3 times.

Jones retired from competitive golf at age 28.

Neither Nicklaus nor Woods matched Jones' record for success in open
competition before the age of 29.

You can't be the greatest if you never won the PGA or Masters.
