Looks like Lehman picked Stewart Cink and Scott Verplank for the US
Ryder Cup.

I like Verplank a lot. He's a pretty tough match play player and a
grinder. Cink, well, he's played well in the past but I've read that
his putting really stinks right now..........

I guess Lehman was looking for some past Ryder Cup experience for a
team where a lot of the guys haven't played before.

Lehman sure put Verplank's neck in the noose. Cink was 12th on the points
list, but Verplank was 20th. If Verplank doesn't go 4-0, there are 7 other
guys who every right to be pissed at the PGA of America and their Captain.

I think that the relative lack of Ryder Cup experience may be more of a
help than a hindrance. Take a leaf out of the European book of recent
form, and let a group of talented, but unheralded, youngsters take the
opportunity to make a name for themselves by knocking off better-known
opposition. It has certainly worked for them, and all these guys need to
do is put the comfy PGA Tour personas aside, and go out and scrap like
hungry mongrels.

This could be a really good one.

It could be. But I suspect team play and match play experience is
still a big help. It isn't just a matter of playing hard or being
motivated - it's playing right. And there are significant
differences in how to play best team golf with playing best medal
play.

I wonder if a captain would ever have the guts to have Tiger just play
the singles and four-ball matches, and sit out the foursomes. He can
hit amazing recovery shots when his drives go awry, but his partners
probably can't. He's 2-5-1 in foursomes.

Although if the captain was good enough of a leader, he could remind
him of how Tiger won The (British) Open, and persuade him to put his
partners' balls in the middle of the fairway.

Tiger promised to take on a leadership role with the kids. Nothing
like taking responsibility to mature someone. Tiger has shown a
tremendous ability to learn. Maybe he can learn here.

Cink has always been a streaky putter but he putts best under pressure.
I predict that he will putt well in the Ryder Cup and help the US team
to not be embarrased. Victory? Well, we shall see how the rookies do :)

The rookies can't do a whole lot worse than some of the experienced

very true! I think Captain Lehman will have them all ready to play this
time around. Whether that'll be enough to beat the Euros on their own
turf I don't know...

From what I've read, The K Club isn't exactly unfamaliar territory for
American players. I've never been there but from what I understand
it's not a links layout and not a whole lot different from a typical
course you might see on tour.

they had some shots of it this morning between Pavin's and Lehmans
interviews and it looks parkland like. And, it was Windy. Reading
Woosnam's interview in one of the golf rags this weekend he admitted
that he's had trees added to cut off corners of doglegs and will have
the rough cut low around the greens to promote the "on the ground" game
that the Euros like...It will definitely be an interesting set of matches.

Are we talking about the same guy? Cink is one of the biggest choke
putters out there.
But I do like his swing.

everyone is a choke putter occasionally, even you. When SC is rolling
the ball well he's one of the best putters on Tour, hence my mention of
"streaky". Again, I predict that he will putt well at the RC. Take a $1k
bet?...nah, but then opinions are like a**holes

I was a little surprised with the Verplank pick, and the Cink pick
seemed a lock for many many months.

He didn't even make the cut at the US Open, PGA, or Players
Championships, and that kind of performance in pressure packed and
highly motivated international fields would worry me. (He did tie for
16th at the Masters.)

Which one?
