Grapevine Muni is an excellent public course north of the Airport (DFW).

You don't want to play Grapevine this summer. If you'll remember,
it's down in a valley, protected from most breezes.

One of our group played there last week and had to quit, and the temp
was 99 degrees. He played yesterday with us in 105 degree heat at our
course with no problem.

I think the OP is supposed to be here in ober?

THAT EXPLAINS IT.

I played there last year, walking with my SpeedCart when the temp
was pretty warm (low 90s, I think) but not anything like we've had
this summer. I was a bit out of shape, but I had been walking courses
much of the year, so I wasn't terribly unfit... but I thought I was
going to stroke out coming up the hill from the 18th green. And it
seems like every time I play out there in warm weather, it wears me
out. It's that stagnant air down there that does it, of course!

The Creeks Course is fairly recently remodeled and very nice
by muni standards, comparable to upscale public courses. You
won't be disappointed. I haven't played the Lakes Course in
years so I can't comment on that.

Also good, probably a notch below Indian Creek but still nice,
is Sherrill Park in Richardson. I think that's about the same
distance from the Galleria area as Indian Creek, and it also
offers 36 holes (the #1 course is recommended over the #2).

If you have a few bucks to spend, head north on the Tollway
and visit Tex at the Tribute. That course is special, very
highly recommended.

I understand that it has been redone and is in good shape. Where in
Dallas are you going to be? It's a large area, and there are several
good public courses to pick from.

"I'll be in Dallas by the Galeria area in ." :-p

Bobby, you mentioned that several nice public courses were
nearby, but the Galleria is kinda Ground Zero for *not* being
especially close to any good public golf, isn't it? Lots of
swank clubs near there, though.

Yep...and Sherril Park is probably the nearest. There's always L.B.
Houston though :-) The fact that he's at 635 gives him immediate
freeway access which is a good thing. He's within 15-20 miles of
several, like Firewheel, even Bear Creek.

Almost equidistant, but Indian Creek is easier to get to from there.
Straight up the tollway to Frankford and take a left.

Which Tollway intersects Frankford?

Tollway, exit Frankford...but then, you drive a long way on
Frankford...

Easiest is West on 635, North on 35, exit Frankford, bear right (East)
and the course is on the left about 1 mile from 35.

They both do, actually.

Correct, no exit on Frankford from the tollway.

I have planned several trips, including getting good course recommendations
at www.tripadvisor.com

when i was planning my trip to destin, fl, the folks who posted in the forum
were very helpful. match that with your own research and you should wind up
playing some nice courses without breaking the bank.

I agree on the drive(s)...almost identical.
However, I think better golf will be found at Indian Creek...I've never
felt the need to send someone to Sherrill Park. :)

Better golf course at Indian Creek, worse pace of play.

He should really just head your way and play the Tribute. :)

You Westies are too funny :) All traffic out East of you is bad..city
or freeway...why? It's because everyone wants to live out East :)

My rule of thumb for any out of town visitors is to keep them off city
streets (stop lights, cross traffic, etc) as much as possible. Sure,
635 and 35 are busy freeways and will jam up...he'll need to travel 4
miles(?) on 635 and another 5 (?) on 35...then he arrives at the
course. EXTREMELY hard to get lost this way....where as popping him on
to Frankford for 10 miles and 20 lights is painful.

It's not so much "east" anymore, though, it's "northeast." I don't
mind Dallas proper all that much these days. But just about anything
north of Forest Lane is hellish to me.

Sorry BK, I take that back, there is a Frankford exit on the North
Texas Tollway..my bad!
But I wouldn't send him that way...way too much city driving.
