Ok, I have two sets of irons. One is a set of Taylor Made 300's which I really like the lie on. I also have a set of cobra 2100's which don't set up with as nice a lie for me. The problem is that the Cobra's are at least a half a club longer than the Taylor Mades. I was wondering what could account for this. The Cobra's seem more shut than the Taylor's and are perhaps underlofted. I was hoping that the Cobra's have newer shafts that account for the difference. I guess what I am wondering is if there is anything I can do with my Taylor Made irons that look so much nicer at address to give them that extra distance. Any help greatly appreciated.

Knowing EXACTLY how far you hit each iron and having a swing to hit the ball in the right direction is what's important. If you and I are 160 yds out, what difference does it make that you hit 6 iron and I hit 5 iron when I'm 5' from the flagstick and you're 15yds left of the green pin high?? Dave

Other than for your longest iron, what do you care about half a club longer? What is that for you: about 5 - 8 yards? Which irons are more *accurate* for you? That's the only question I'd ask. -- 'It's obvious to all that my predictions were wrong. Shall I also admit the sky is blue?' 'Isn't it funny that Final Cut Pro is nowhere to be seen at Pixar? They're an all PC shop. ' -- 'me finally admitting that Pixar isn't an all PC shop.' '... when most Pixar movies were made ... Final Cut Pro didn't even exist.' -- 'So sue me. I just wrote my remarks off the top of my head.' 'It is Mac OS X, not BSD.' -- 'From Mac OS to BSD Unix.'

There isn't any standard for the lofts of irons and many manufactures make clubs now that are a full club longer than older clubs. For example, if you used to use a 7 iron from 150 yards, with a new set it may very well be an 8 iron. It is just that the loft of the clubs are different. If you are real concerned about what the number stamped on the bottom of the iron is, write a different number on it.

Could be the shafts, or it could be simply that the lofts are stronger on the Cobras. There's no real "standard" for iron lofts, and some companies can make their 5i the same loft as someone elses 4i ... but all that really means is it has a different number on the bottom ... and then you have a gap at the low end and they can sell you a GW 8^). Most companies publish the technical specs for their clubs, so you can start by checking the web for the loft numbers. As other folks have said, if you actually like the shorter clubs better and hit them straighter, then it's not really a problem. Use an extra fairway wood or hybrid for the longer shots (which most of us should do anyway). If it's really bugging you, you would probably need to visit a good club maker and they can analyze the lofts, shaft length, and shaft flex and try to give you an answer ... anything else is just a WAG. What kind of shafts? Often graphite shafts are 1/2" longer than steel.
