Started off great too. Weak block off the first tee into the trees on
the right, and it kicked back and right. I was in hardpan just right of
the 5th fairway. I duffed a 5w to the edge of the 1st fairway, and then
bladed a 6I to the back of the green. The first putt didn't make it off
the top tier. The second putt would have rolled off the green, but it
hit the back of the hole hard and dropped in. I thought I had doubled
the hole!

14 was another adventure. I thought the drive was OB, and hit a
provisional, but it wasn't. I duffed a 7W down the left side and then
hit a crappy 6I to about 100 yards. Next was a PW to about 6" for the
par! The real magic was on the back 9. Long putt on 17. Knocked the
flag down on 15.

It's all about putting in the end, and I was totally unconcious...I
made pretty much everything! 12 GIRS and unconcious putting...and look
what happens! Still +2 for the differential though from the blue tees.

We were playing roll the ball a scorecard, and I figure I rolled it
about 20X, so if I enter this in GHIN, it has to go in as at least an
89 I figure. I realize most golfers who cheat like this don't count
this, but I do. IMHO, if we had played golf, my score was probably
around 76 or so. We were also playing in the leather kinda gimmies,
but the way I was putting, I didn't take too many (the 6" putt on 14
for example!), and I doubt I would have missed any anyways.

Today I played 9 holes at the local muni. 46! Back to normal!

I'm impressed that you admitted up front about rolling the ball, and
gimmies. A nice round, anyway. Sounds like you were in the zone!

I was pretty impressed when I saw the 69....and then I saw the distance
from the blue tees.....and that you were rolling it. C'mon, play real
golf!

Yawn.... seriously. Who cares? You tee it up every shot. Why would
someone who can play half way decent roll the ball? I don't get it.

So did you change that opening 6 to a 5 after the round was over?
And it looks like you made a 41 on the 15th hole. Island green?

BTW, what course is that and which tees did you play? It looks like a
decent track from the Black Tees, but I'd bet I could break 70 from the
Whites the first time I ever played it.

Yeah, that's right .... I said "bet."

It's a nice, easy going kinda course. I suspect you could easily break 70
from the blues (where I usually play on that course). You still have to hit
the shots though!

I think it's fun to look at scorecards. I've noted here that there are
a wide variety of scores, more birdies and bogeys than pars, right? I
find my best rounds tend to be loaded with pars, with hardly any
birdies or bogeys. Fun to look at this and the yardage and imagine some
of the holes.

Good round.

Nice round, Rob.

At only 5600 yards from the blues, I think you can safely say you "brought
the midget to its knees."

It's a par 70 though!

I'm not demeaning your scoring. There are enough holes of sufficient length
that, obviously, you have to hit the shots, and of course, you have to make
the putts. I saw one short par 4 (under 300 yards), but a lot of great
courses have one "short" par four (although rarely that short), and I
consider it a good design feature (although more than one and it would come
close to crossing the line into "executive course" territory).

The course I play most of my golf on is about 6,000 from the blues -- not
prodigiously long, by any stretch, but demanding enough to force you to make
good golf shots to score well. (Although I must say, there are also "gold"
tees there, where it stretches the course out to over 6700).

My comment was not a facetious slap at your scoring. Only that it was done
on a course that isn't exactly a "monster" (a reference to Ben Hogan's
famous remark, "I brought the monster to its knees.").

For the record, I do have several sub-70 rounds of my own, but they all came
on an executive course, a par 67. The only thing my scoring proved was that
I could putt on anything, as that place had the worst greens I've ever seen
in my life. But until now, you've never heard me brag about those rounds
(and I'm not exactly "bragging" now, either), since I don't consider the
achievement to have been registered on a "real" golf course.

A 69 is a 69. Not bad, fella.

But as you were discussing only a week or two ago about low handicappers and
their inability to play to their handicap anywhere else, I'd like to see you
card a 69 (or a 1-under par) on a "real" golf course.

...we didn't win anything anyways, so DQ works for me! Of course, if I
am disqualified, ie not qualified in some sense, I should get my bet
back, shouldn't I?

;^)

...a good point though... the last time I can recall anyone wanting
cards signed and attested was in a club championship 3 years ago
(haven't played in club championship since).

Preferred lies, playing gimmes, shooting a 69 and turning in an 89.
The best of all worlds.

Rolling it around does raise questions in my mind about the authenticity of
the score. But the bigger problem, in my view, is the "inside the leather"
gimmes. I've seen enough players miss those short putts to know quite well
there's no such thing as a gimme.

we do "inside the leather gimmes" but they're upside down. It's the
length of the putter grip, not the shaft end of the grip to the putter
head length. We're talking 6" to 8"

My score was +2 relative to the course rating of 67. Could I score +2
on another course? I doubt it! It's not any different than shooting a
71 on your typical par 72 from tees rated 69, which is very commen. The
hole that is less than 300 yards has a grove of trees blocking access
to the green. Long hitters can easily carry the trees, and just as
easily fly into the tennis courts behind the green. It's probably no
more than 280 or so to the tennis courts on that line.

As you know, it's all about the putting in the end. My game has
progressed to the point where I get it on or near the green in reg
almost every time, and then it's all short game. The trick is getting
over the beilef that your shots have to look like Tiger Woods'. Just
get the ball there!!! I just happened to have the long and short game
going. Yesterday I putted really well, but could not hit a decent
drive...so I get a 46 for my efforts!

I started to play a tricked up muni regularly, and to play a course
where the greens are reasonable and you actually get flat lies on the
fairways made the game seem a lot easier. This muni has so many brutal
lies in the middle of the fairway it's hard to beleive it gets any play
at all. Having the ball 1 foot below your feet, with your left foot 6"
above your right is routine. Having a putt trickle by the hole...and
then trickle off the green is all in a days play there...and if you
don't get it to the hole, it comes up 5 feet short and breaks off
sharply leaving you 10 feet from the hole..is also routine.

...but in the end, it was all in the putting.....if I putt normally, I
don't break 75, even with all the breaks I got.
