The ober 2006 Golf Digest page 79 has a column for The Serious
Golfer on "How to repair a Golf Mark". It discusses alternatives and
ends up with a new school recommendation:

1. Insert the tool mark around the base of a pitch mark, just not so
deep that it severs the roots.
2. Make a gentle twisting motion around the edges of the crater so
the grass gets pushed back in and fills the divot.
3. Tap down on the mark.

You must have a different version of Golf Digest than me. On mine it's
in page 70

Regional ads probably cause the difference.

Darn! I didn't get my copy yet. But if you don't know how to repair a ball
mark, then you probably aren't repairing them anyway. And if you don't get
Golf Digest, how will you ever know?

Is there any other way?

Yeah, use your putter to knock the outsides of the crater towards
the center and then tamp down to level - as demonstrated by
Gary Player on the Golf Channel.
