What looks funny about these clubs?

The 4-PW are all the same length. They are also the same weight, the same
swingweight, the same MOI and the same frequency. The are manufactured with
the same lie and with adjustments made to the lofts to maintain a 10-12 yard
gap between clubs.

I've played MOI matched clubs for years and figured you couldn't really make
a set of clubs that felt much more alike when you swung them than what you
get with an MOI matched set. I was wrong. Very wrong.

Last week I took the new sticks to the range. Every club feels _exactly_ the
same when you swing it. And I don't mean close, I mean exactly. In fact it was
almost a little disconcerting at first. At one point I hit 9I, 4I, 9I, 4I, etc.
for a while and it was weird to see the difference in ball flight from two
clubs that were the same length.

I took them to the course today for the first time. Conditions were brutal.
Edurado blew through here yesterday so the course was soft and playing long.
It was also the day for Round 1 of the Club Championship (which I didn't play
in) so they left the rough stupidly long and put the pins in all the tough
spots. The round took 5 hours, 15 minutes (damn, I hate being behind a
tournament) and I'm coming off a cold so let's just say my disposition wasn't
the best. Oh, did I forget to mention my putter was ice cold? I had six
(count 'em) burned edges.

All that and I shot 1 under my handicap. With even average putting, I'm close
to my best round of the year.

I still have some issues to deal with. The long PW is tough to handle around
the greens. Midway through the round I started using the shorter SW for those
shots and got much better results. There's also the fact that the set of irons
I've been using lately (Ping Eye 2) have weak lofts, so I spent about half the
day overclubbing, but I should be able to work that out.

In terms of playability, these are definitely game improvement clubs. They're
probably not for a "player", which, sadly, means they're just right for me.

Standard disclaimer, I've got no stake in these. For the Darksiders, they are
available as components:

So what is their length equivalent to in a regular set?

The problem with a longer PW or "short" iron is that you're going to
put tremendous spin on the ball compared to a regular wedge.

Just choke down.

They're 37.5 inches. That's a modern day 6 iron.

I didn't have much of a problem there, but, truthfully, I don't generally hit
the ball cleanly enough to spin it a lot anyway.

To get to where I'm comfortable, I'd be down on the grip. I may carry another
PW just to use aroung the greens. The jury's still out on that.

Yeah, I'm bummed out about that. We're going to try again next year.

Hey Kenny, where do you play? Signature was almost completely underwater
so I went out to Bay Creek Nicholas course that was in great shape.

www.stoneleighgolf.com and www.tantallongolf.com.

Both are wet and sloppy this weekend.

Thanks for the info Kenny, you've got me thinkin agin!

Long, long ago I posted that I'd had all my clubs reshafted to the same length as
my favourite club (a 4i at that time). Of course they weren't matched in any way
and I only had limited success with them. Success in those days was shooting 120
consistently :)

As the article mentions, a long SW was near impossible, still it was just something
that seemed to make sense for this 6'3" hacker but I only kept them until the end of
the season. Maybe I'll try them again, although I'm not into clubmaking. (Maybe Mike
Dalecki would do this?)

Maybe the same idea can be extended (pun not intended, and not withdrawn) to
the woods? For instance, my 7w is my favourite long club and I'll push it to the
extreme sometimes rather than use a longer club. Something about the feel that
I can't describe.

Regards,
Alan

Alan,

I'm sure Mike would be more than happy to help you out and he does excellent
work.

I don't know of any place where you can get suitable components for building
single length woods, but I do know where you can buy already assembled single
length woods (they ain't cheap). See http://www.1irongolf.com/

Kenny

Thanks Kenny. Yes I've looked at that site before and they're too pricey for me.
