In norway this days, a stupid, stupid farmer, who wrote an article about golf in the magazine "NATIONEN" (http://www.nationen.no) have created a massive discussion, mostly against the farmer. I thought i should show some international people how stupid a norwegian farmer can be: Quote from a very stupid norwegian man, named Olav Randen: "Golf is a rich-man activity, which is played by very few people worldwide. And it destroys mother earth. " "It is because the golf courses and the beaches that the tsunami killed so many people in Thailand in 2004... The stats comes from indian scientist" - He doesn't mention what scientist, in other words: Pure BULLSHIT! If you understand norwegian, or have a tool to translate it - you can read the article here: http://www.nationen.no/meninger/gjestekommentar/article2249471.ece Bon apetit!

Nowadays, people often combine golf courses with wetlands. They combine ball parks with parking lots.

Golf is one sport that should remain in existence - otherwise how would the general areas used for golf courses be utilized? If the Venezuelan matter provides homes for the people with government funds, it's a great deal. >m h o >=A0v =83e >=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0u s o - until everyone comes home

At my local course, which opens a couple of hours later on Mondays, they often have early morning "bird walks," in which a local bird watching group walks the course. I think they said that last time they spotted 40 species. Bird watching is not my thing, but it hardly seems to be spoiled ground. It's not uncommon to see a new brood of baby ducks swimming in the waters.

My local course has Canada Geese, ducks, foxes, beavers, groundhogs, chipmunks, gray squirrels, black squirrels, and many, many birds. And, my area is overrun with deer. Oh, and you can watch all the birds you want as long as you pay your greens fee and keep up with the group ahead of you.

Well, Fred, if you drain a wetland or level a forest to build a golf course, which you then maintain with chemical herbicides and pesticides, it is not exactly a net gain for Mother Nature.

Actually, just plain LIVING is an activity that "destroys mother earth". Think of all the everyday activities we engage in that in fact does bad things go the earth. <fredarn@gmail.com > wrote in message news:1157086298.496116.100320@e3g2000cwe.googlegroups.com... > In norway this days, a stupid, stupid farmer, who wrote an article > about golf in the magazine "NATIONEN" (http://www.nationen.no) have > created a massive discussion, mostly against the farmer. > > I thought i should show some international people how stupid a > norwegian farmer can be: > > > Quote from a very stupid norwegian man, named Olav Randen: > "Golf is a rich-man activity, which is played by very few people > worldwide. Even beavers do this. But the hard part about global warming is that there is good evidence that farms, buildings, roads, & irrigation contribute far more to global warming than greenhouse gasses do - and while we don't have the supporting evidence for it - it's quite possible that over fishing the oceans contributes significantly as well. We use tremendous amounts of petroleum putting nitrogen into the soil for the food our population needs. But we can feel good about sorting our trash, but the real problem is one which we are not ready to face.

How many eat pop corn at the turn - in support of additional revenue for the course? The subject punch line is carry-over verbiage from bygone days which has no relevance in to-day's lingo. >m h o >=A0v =83e >=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0u s o - until everyone comes home

Those are justtifiable claims, but there is also the fact that as opposed to other fully paved developements (malls, housing, , golf courses do serve in an urban landscape as wildlife habitat, (in CO I've seen elk, mule deer, fox, coyote a host of unique song birds) some greenspace, and many courses are moving to a more natural regime of management, ecological out of bounds areas including wetlands, less chemicals, in the southwest xeroscaping, and more native grasses are being tried. So in balance I'm less upset about a golf course then a clear cut for more asphalt any day, so if done intelligentlly it doesn't have to be a net loss for MN, especially at the edges of urban sprawl.
