I had problems with the article, and with quicktime. This computer runs
a fully updated XP and has a fully updated quicktime. IT's not a MAC
though. You can get images like that from the government, say the USGS.
US taxpayers paid for them in any event (unless google has some
satellites in orbit that I don't know about).

I'm so sorry this link caused you trouble. I'll warn my golfing friends
that I sent it to. Thanks.

Try Google Earth Beta 4. You'll like it.

One neat thing about Google Earth is you can direct it to automatically
tour ala satellite views from a low altitude, predetermined points, in
the macworld case, from tee 1 to drive on 1 to green 1, etc for the
whole 18 holes, sorta like the old helicopter views of a hole's layout
on a TV broadcast without the narration. I put some lousy TV quality
video on YouTube that toured the GPS saved breadcrumbs from rounds of
golf that I played (hacked). The video doesn't do justice to the detail
you can see when viewing the Google Earth "replay" on your computer.

Don't get dizzy! I tend to go in circles alot! A link to one of my
YouTube videos :

I just clicked on the link. I can get such images free, and I can load
them into any one of a number of ordinary graphics packages and
calculate distances, for example.

I'm using Firefox with scripting turned off. I'm so sorry if the link
did anything bad to you. Google Earth Beta 4 is free, but you can pay
for a plus version or a professional version too? The free version works
fine for this application. I didn't look at the video, I just
downloaded the KMZ file and opened it in Google Earth and played the
tour. Is the video the problem?

Pay good money to use something that is free. You also get programs
hitch hiking into your computer when you go to their website, a real
touch of class!

I don't make these maps or use the ones I had anymore since I now use a
laser.

A while back I posted a page that I made:

http://www.areddy.net/golfmaps/

While the features I have turned on are sparse, the advantage is that
you can put in the height and width of the image, so you could
conceivably plot the entire course on the screen.

The only problem is that there's no way to do a right click and save
the image (against the Google Terms of Use), but you can do a screen
capture.

Using photoshop I then plotted arcs. Here's an example of one that I
did a few years ago (in fact, I don't think this is a google image, but
from somewhere else)

http://www.areddy.net/misc/silverlake1.jpg

Very neat. I would need the arcs to extend at least to all inbounds
areas, left and right ;-( One of the advantages to a GPS since I'm
likely to be off the fairway and out of site of the hole, tho some GPS's
don't work well from heavy tree cover.

Google satellite images ARE free. And quicktime basic is free too.

Henry, I'm interested in how you got Google Earth to play a movie.

I may not have the latest version. Many times I've "flown" over golf
courses, but it's always been by using the "hand" to grab the screen and set
it in motion manually. I've never "recorded" the moves, set placemarks, and
played back the entire sequence.

How do you do that?

Randy,

I know Google Earth Beta 4 does this using the play button on the
sidebar, just get your ducks (placemarks) in a row (in the temporary
folder) and press play. In the options you can adjust altitude, viewing
angle (I think the ruler function is accurate only with an overhead
view) , and speed. GoogleEarth Beta 4 has some tutorials already set
up. Once you've got everything set up, you can use "save as" for the
temporary folder and share the KML or KMZ file with your friends.

Capturing the screen in windows, I've used an external DVD recorder at
highest compression rather than software because of limited CPU and
funds. The macworld article mentions the software that he used.

I always just threw tennis shoes at the screen watching Ga Tech games ;-)

You can also use the "web based" version of Google Earth: Google Maps
(maps.google.com).
And there are sites like http://www.golfworldmap.com which lists
hundreds golf courses with high resolution satellite images.
