I am just not sure that this makes the destination more appealing.

You may be right, but try to view it from a gross receipts paradigm.

How do you figure you're on the invitation list? If you stay home all
the crappy weather will stay with you.

Well, Bandon has to be played in Scottish weather. Plus I bring good
weather to Bandon, ask Scott and Rev :-)

Yeah, the only heavy rain day I ever remember at Bandon is when Ocho
shows up to play.
Thank goodness my feet were raw and I didn't play.

Just remember, if you want f'd up weather, invite Ocho.

Why do you post unfactual items?
Bandon in 2007 is $195 for your first round, $100 for a replay on any
course and it's free if you want to play more. $295 for 2+ rounds of
golf. Not even close to your $400/round post.

I guess it depends upon where you draw the "Sucker vs. Unique Golf
Experience" level. After playing there, I haven't looked at any other
course the same. My level of relative fear was gone/reduced. Bandon
and Pacific are special places.

You're right in that they are quickly pricing themselves out of the
reach of the great majority of golfers who appreciate the game for what
it is rather than carving another notch in the bloated belt of those
that brag that they've been there. I'll join long&left in the
lucky/glad to have played there category.

Of course, there are other places in North America that hold the same
level of fascination for me. Whistling Straights, that Prairie course
in Nebraska, Kiawah Island. There are others, I'm sure. And the best
part is that I'll also come across pleasant surprises along the way.
(Insert Soldier Hollow in Utah here...)

Pricing themselves out of most golfers is right. Bandon is outa reach for
me now, unless Tex writes 'Dillhole' on a bakers dozen more hats of mine.

For about $600, you can get two nights, four rounds, and all your food

well, you've obviously never been there! I've played Bandon and Pacific
Dunes several times and don't consider myself a "sucker". On the
contrary I feel rather lucky to have been able to play there. I'm sure
you'll hear the same from others that have played these courses.

So, stay in Bandon By The Sea for a fraction of the lodging cost and
drive the 8 or so miles to the course and play it for a slightly higher
rate. No biggie - just get there to play it. Awesome stuff.

Or, better yet, make it a stop along your way up the Oregon and
Washington Coasts. Great beaches - especially in the winter - and even
better fishing the farther north you get if that's your bag. If you're
into Blues (I'm guessing by the harp always laying around) make it all
the way to Seattle for Demitrio's Jazz Alley (great music/food venue)
or the Yale in Vancouver, BC.

I'm not a Travel Agent, but, I played one on TV once.

Heck, I stayed at the campground 3 miles away. $16 well spent (I love

Different strokes, I suppose. Golfing in and of itself is a good enough
experience for me. What the surroundings look like doesn't mean all
that much, so long as the course is in decent shape.

You want scenery, go a few miles up the coast from Bandon. Some of the
best scenery you will ever feast your eyes on! I would much rather go
fishing in that part of the world anyways, catch a salmon, roast it on
a open fire on the beach..some guy maybe has a guitar...(I've got a
thing you can hook up to your car battery and it will run a 30 watt
amp)....another guy is blowing harp.....You should always have an A
harmonica lying around! ......than stay in some overpriced resort
"experience" and play a round of golf at that same "resort experience"
where they'd kick you out if you lit a fire outdoors and you don't want
to play loud music...Noooooooo! I guess I'm just not into "resort
experiences". I like to travel a lot, but I'm not a big hotel/pre
planned travel agency kinda person...which does get me into trouble
from time to time, but most of the time it does not...and at least when
things don't work out I'm not out $2-3K!

Again, I guess it's to each his own. The scenery is free. Be it on the west coast (and much more spectacular in Canada than in the US), or on the
east coast (where the US is more spectacular than Canada). I can hike along the west coast of Vancouver Island or along the east coast of Georgia and
get far more scenery than at a golf course, and it's free!

As I get older, I stay in Holiday Inn type motels more, but the real fun is camping. Never had as good a time in any club or bar or restaurant as
some of the times I've had out on a beach, or in a campground, or on hiking and/or canoe trips. The absolute best rounds of golf funwise have been on
goat tracks. Somehow the course doesn't make the experience for me.

We camped with the crew for 5 days on the coast. Froze though it was
July. We vowed it would be our last camping trips. Bugs, dirt, and
people who are dirty and bug you.

Rental house with a dock for the ski boat!!

Well, in any event, happy travels.

I've yet to be back east, though, I hope to rectify that next year. I
understand they golf back there too.

The coast from The Carolinas on down through Florida has some really
nice natural areas...and some great golf courses...and not all of them
are pricey...or so I'm told! The Appalachians from W. North Carolina to
N. Georgia are also really nice, and I know there are some nice, not so
pricy golf courses around there, especially in Georgia...some of the
company you might keep while in the area may be suspect though! ;^)

Damn Right, and I kicked Rev outa his morning spot too, then I stole his PW
for a year. Now that I think back; I should have taken you up on the free
Lobster dinner Sunday night.
