Faldo also picked up more than one major on someone else's choke jobs.
Hoch, Norman and even Floyd at Augusta, not sure about the Open titles.
He was great, and machine like, but also had some great breaks in the
majors. Of course he had to be in contention - but he was sort of the
anti-Norman with his good fortune.

McCord tells a good story about Miller. Somewhere in the desert,
McCord had made a cut, and on Sunday he was leaving the locker room
feeling pretty good about being t-54 or thereabouts. He checks out the
broadcast as he is leaving. Miller was leading the tournament, playing
the par five 18th. He had about 20 strokes on McCord. Miller hits his
second with a 4 wood, and immediately starts yelling at the ball to get
in. McCord thinks what sort of idiot yells at a 4 wood to get in. The
ball hits about two feet from the cup and sticks. McCord said he
realized at that moment that he would never challenge the great players
on tour.

So that guy who yells after all of Tiger's tee shots is Miller with a
false mustache?

I am so sick of Johnny Miller I could puke. The subtext to every last
one of his comments is that he was better than the guys he's covering.
He was very good for a very short time and degenerated into the choking
dog that he accuses today's players of being. Then he used the classic
"spend more time with the family" excuse and quit to avoid further
embarrassment.

Wadkins is pretty much the same way. A self-involved arrogant,
swaggering spoiled brat. He and Strange are two peas in a pod -
completely free of any personality whatsoever. Good riddance.

Well... he was.

His back gave out. That reverse C finish shortened a lot of
careers, his included.

And his putting gave out. He also said he was burned out by age 29, dunno
if that mostly means family time was being compromised or what. He also
pointed out that most of his wins were early in the season and that he did
not do too well after May.

<snip >

His putting gave out because he couldn't practice it much anymore
due to the back pain. Try spending 30 minutes putting and see how
uncomfortable your back gets.

If the long putter had been invented he could have continued putting
practice.

Great news for Faldo.
Bad news for the trained monkey who was in line to get Lanny's job.

CBS has just improved their golf telecasts 100%.
Now if they'd just bring back Ben Wright.....

Sorry to hear he won't play the Masters, though. Nick still has the game to
play well on occasion, as he reminded us at St. Andrews last year.

I suggest to Nick that he have a chat with McCord and Feherty sometime
before heading to Augusta. It would be embarassing for ANGC to ban a
three-time former champion, but I don't doubt they would.

I thought Faldo was joining TGC next season for its golf coverage. Now
that he'd going to do the CBS thing, I can again stand to watch. Lanny
was the worst.

You may remember me. I used to be called Howard U. Dewing, but only one
guy ever answered the question.

Faldo will also be the lead analyst for TGC. TGC has the contract for
PGA events on weekdays; the CBS and NBC take over most weekends.

So who was the better golfer, Faldo or Miller?

Miller was better, Faldo was good longer.

The thing about Miller is that while he was great, he was better-
than-Tiger great at pure ballstriking. Maybe not as good as Hogan
but close. I know I haven't seen ballstriking of that quality again
in my lifetime, not even from Tiger... when Miller was blowing the
field away, he wasn't making a bunch of 20-footers. He was making
3-footers. Tiger is of course a more complete player, I'm referring
only to Miller's ballstriking, especially with irons.

Faldo, at his prime, was just a machine, the Nelson of his era.
He wasn't making spectactular shots, he just never hurt himself.

I think that it was Nicklaus who said he never saw a player more in the zone
than Miller the year he won the Phoenix Open. Jim McClean said that he was
hitting them so close you could kick them in the hole. I think that the
week after he won the Phoenix Open (by a huge margein) he also won the next
tournament, also by a large margin.

Even at his best, his putting was ok, but not spectacular. Yet he had the
ability to go low. I posted something a week or so ago, I think it was from
his induction into the golf hall of fame that claimed Johnny Miller hit it
closer to the pin than any player in history. That would include Hogan.

Wow, Bush gets 3,000 Americans and 100,000 Iraqis killed for nothing,
trashes the Constitution, creates record deficits, and destroys
America's international credibility and moral stature, and half the
people in RSG still support him. But not a peep in support of Lanny.

I loved the way Lanny played golf: pull a club and fire at the
pin, period, never back off! Probably cost him a lot of money
to play that way, but it was fun to watch.

There, does that count? :)

How do I find trained monkeys?
