I really need to focus on putting. Shot 78 Wednesday, hitting 12/18
GIRs. I think I hit 9/13 FWs. No penalties, but 3 3-jacks. Had 34
putts, only 1 birdie. Worse putting outing since I cut my putter down
(my average has been down, however). My average putts/round this year
is up a bit (I AM hitting more GIR this year, though) to a paltry
32.31. My birdie average has NOT gone up over last year, even though
I'm getting more chances. I don't think I'm chipping any worse,
either. The two 3-putts here out of character, but I'm just not
rolling those birds in like I've done in the past.

Looking at the PGA stats, #200 is 30.49!!!

Took Wednesday off, played 36.

I used to play Links 2000 a bunch. Sometimes I'll get over a putt and
have no clue as to which way it's breaking, let alone how much.

I feel your pain. Had three 3-putt bogeys yesterday including the 2nd
and 3rd holes! It was at Eagle Ridge in Gilroy, CA. A Johnny Miller
design that is pretty tough, put still, I slapped it around pretty good.
My next golf lessons will definitely by on putting.

This is going to sound really wierd, but, have you thought about
getting one of those video golf games? They place a grid on the green
showing slopes and undulations when the player is analysing the putt.

I used to goof around with those things before I started actually
playing the gemme, but, I always look at a green that way when I'm
reading it. Comparing the result of my stroke to what I had read
helped me refine future strokes. While I'm not a *great* putter, I'm
not too bad. My mistakes are usually speed-related rather than
directional.

I looked at my last 10 rounds, and I'm average 1.2 3-putts a round.
My average GIR during that time is 8/18. My par save is 43%. I play
on pretty tough greens. Not overly huge, but pretty fast and
undulating.

I wish I had a quick way to measure my first putt distance besides
pacing it off.

I think my main problem is reading greens. I played in a scramble last
Friday. I putted last, and I made 6/8 putts, 4 of which were over 15
feet. Now, granted, it makes it a hell of a lot easier when you see
the ball roll 3 times, but I think that says something for my stroke.
I'm really not sure how to "learn" how to read greens better. Shit, I
play 4 times a week, so practice isn't an issue.

Play four times a week? To quote Pflum, "you are dead to me."

That's because they hit their approaches closer and chip closer when
they do miss a green. After his chip shot Tiger often faces either a
tap-in or a 2-4 footer for par. Contrast that with most amateurs who
spend the day trying to make 10-12 footers after their chips (or first
putts).

How many strokes per round could you save if you eliminated all
3-putts? So work on that first. That's mostly feel. After that,
concentrate on getting the ball closer to the hole, either through
improved iron play or better chipping. As five-iron tells us, "A short
putt will find the target more often than a long one."

Wow, Larry. 12 Greens ain't too shabby. RE: The Putting - a thread
floated around a couple of weeks ago about having the mindset of making
*every* putt you stand over. Don't just lag them, but, make them.

I decided to give that a serious try and had several very good rounds
(for me) come quickly. Part of the regular repartee now. Maybe
that'll help.

If you could putt on greens as perfect as the pros play, your putting would
improve at once.

I totally disagree with that.....

I tried it, and it wasn't easy.

nice shooting otherwise. i played last week after cutting my 2 ball
down to 33" and putting on a thicker grip. i usually grip the putter
waaay down anyway, so it feels good. i find i have been leaving putts
short since cutting it down. i wonder if some lead tape may solve the
issue. shot 86 on wednesday, good ball striking, but 35 putts,
including 2 3putts and a number of missed oportunities for 1 putts.

don't think anyone on any tour averages 35 putts :P
