I'll be in the area the weekend of the 20/21/22 and am looking for a
good place to play on Friday (the 20th).

Any recommendations?

Unless you know a member of King's Crossing, Corpus Christi Country
Club, or even
River Hills, drive to San Antonio. There are several good courses
there.

I guess if you absolutely must play in Corpus, Oso Beach sucks the
least. Pharaoh the most.

My daughter lived there a few years, so I played them all. Except CC
Country Club.
King's Crossing was the best we played.

I've played 'by' SA (a course called the Bandit in New Braunfels).
Favorite Texas course so far.
But, I'm there with my wife and son and humping back up the road doesn't
sound like it'll be recv'd too well.

A shorter hump would be Victoria... Riverside Muni there is
a damned nice muni track. I also have a friend there that
could probably get you on at Victoria CC. But I imagine that
this, too, is further than you want to drive.

Did I understand correctly that both Northshore and Padre
Isles were non-starters? That SUX if so.

I fired a request at Padre Isles, we'll see their response.

Northshore, across the bay in Portland. This is mandatory. I
don't think there's even a close second.

From their ober 2006 newsletter:

The new greens are really coming along and will be opening sometime
this month. When that date is decided upon I will send out an email
notifying everyone
of our grand opening. I want to thank everyone for your patience through
this period of renovation. I know it’s going to be well worth it.

Besides that, looks like I need to know a member to get on -- are you
one :)

Well, bummer. I think I'd still choose it, though, even on
new greens. Not many courses in Texas have Gulffront holes.

I'd call the pro shop, tell them you're thinking of moving
down there and ask if you can play 18. I don't think the
place is terribly busy and I know it's not that exclusive,
it used to be public not that long ago.

Padre Isles CC is another possibility, but I know it's private,
you'd probably need to try the same ploy to get a teetime there.

They're not very limiting, I sent an email to them and found that they
allow public play.

Unfortunately though, the point is moot, they have a tournament on the
20th.

Kevin,

You might try and get in touch with Dave Clary. He regularly posts
here and I believe he lives in Corpus.

I thought that it was him, but I haven't seen his posts anywhere
frequently. I'll look around here though, he shouldn't be too hard to
find.

I think he frequents uk.sport.golf more than he does here.

Actually, I don't want to 'just play' :)

If it's not worth playing, I'd rather just sit on the beach and tip a
few cold ones!

I believe he mentioned once that he plays Oso Beach. Municipal course.
Cheap. With
good reason. You shouldn't have any trouble getting on there, on a
Friday morning.
It's OK, I guess, if you just want to play. I played it several times,
until my daughter and
son-in-law joined River Hills. Now they live in Va. and can't afford to
join anywhere.

So, I was in CC this past weekend and played at Padre Isles CC. Far be
it from me to malign a course, but I can see why Dave Clary was reticent
about paying their full rate $64 weekend rate (which I did not, they had
a $20 super twilight that I paid at 4:48pm). It's not a bad course,
it's just not very good. It's just OK. If you can pay a discount, play
it. If you can play it in the wind, you'll be affected. I'd like to
play it again, only because I scored an 80 (40/40) and left at least 4
strokes out there. It sets up pretty well, if a little short, and the
yardage markers are way off on a few holes (I hit a palm tree behind the
green from '150' with my 145 yd club, into the wind).

Just an FYI, if people are going to be down there.

One more thing (the reason for the 4:48pm info above) is that I finished
18 holes at 6:57pm. 2 hours, 10 minutes! And I was slowed down on
16/17/18 by a twosome that I caught.

So, that's one big plus!
