Tiger teed off at a 164 yard par 3 a moment ago with a 6I. That's what "I" would use for that distance, and I've seen him hit 8 irons that distance. How does he determine what club to use? Or more to the point, how do I decide to use a club that isn't my standard full swing length?

I remember a tourney once where on one hole he hit an 8I like 180 yards and then on another he hit 8I like 135 yards. I find that amazing. :)

Many times I think that the announcers are making a guess at which club the player has selected. Unless he is standing beside the player, it is unlikely that he could read the number on the club. I wouldn't be too worried selecting clubs for "special" shots unless you are on the level of the pros. The caddie supplies the critical information about wind, temperature, topography, humidity, lie of the ball, etc. All of this information is factored and used for club selection and shot type and shape. This is way beyond the needs of the typical golfer so, do as I do and don't worry about it. Play the club you know and the one that works for you..
