So does Noonan really win the match by holing out due to Spackler blowing up the course? Along those lines, how is it that Noonan/Ty Webb won? Before Danny putts, Ty says to Danny "Don't worry about this putt...if you miss it, we lose." And since he did hole it, through whatever means, wouldn't that mean that they tied? Perhaps the Noonan/Webb team had the Smails/Dr. Beeper team dormie? But a missed putt/lost hole still makes for a tie. Not sure why they wouldn't tie...

FWIW, Ian Feming gets it wrong in the Bond-Goldfinger match, too.

I don't think the writers (Harold Ramis and Brian Doyle > Murray, IIRC)were quite up to speed on the rules of competition. ;-) Perhaps Harold Ramis wasn't, but Brian Dolye, and Bill and I think the other brothers Murray as former country club caddies themselves, probably were familiar. The story is loosely based on their experiences as such. I would wager they had a passing familiarity with the ROG. And they definitely weren't playing skins, as Lou (Brian Doyle) lays out the rules at the biginning of the match. To paraphrase: "Lowest score in regulation match play wins the hole."

And remember, Ty Webb does not play golf for money...against people. So think about it that way.

The match was really about the bet which changed before the putt. Judge Smails was using a foot wedge earlier in the match thus he should have been DQed :)

I was under the impression that it was a collaborative effort between Murray, Ramis and Kenney. And that it was a spoof lossely based on the Murray bros Irish Catholic upbringing - the incredibly large family at the beginning of the movie, Bishop Pickering, and Maggie, and the fact that they grew up looping at a country club near their Chicagoland home... Bonus points: What was Doug Kenny's most famous line delivered on film?
