I hate it when 2 of the (relatively) hottest chicks are eliminated in
the first 2 weeks. Then last night the evil conniving Bri tries to
backstab her partner Kelly, after which he carries her through the
elimination with 15 of their 20 points. I'd hate to be whoever winds up
married to her.

Kelly is kind of flaky though. On hitting balls beforehand he said
something like I already know how to hit balls. Does a master carpenter
practice swinging a hammer before building a house?

I guess you better tell Tiger and Vijay they have been waisting their
time with all that practice.

Yeah, he's a flake but you have to make allowances for the fact that
he's from Canada. Also, I noted that they listed him as "a student of
Moe Norman."
But that one statement about the hammer (which sounded like it came
from Moe) made perfect sense to me, especially since I watched it after
playing my first round in 6 months. Do you think Lance Armstrong
practices pedaling before a race? I mean, once you learn to hit the
ball you hit the ball. Practice is for when you're trying to change
something or learn something new. Or in my case, to help you remember.

Golf, after all, is all memory. The ability to remember what to do as
well as the ability to forget about the bad things is crucial. I'll bet
that Kelly guy gets the most out of his ability because he is focused
on the next shot and not the next hole or who he is playing.
He probably also knows the dirty little secret about playing under
pressure.
And that secret is, "Pressure doesn't really exist."

Lietske vs. Woods
If you change your swing you're going to have to practice more, no? But Moe
Norman hit more golf balls than anyone living.

He seems to back up what he says, though. And he has a positive attitude.
But, maybe if he doesn't realize that he's a little weird, maybe he should
...well what do you do when you're just different? Keep it to yourself until
you prove yourself, I guess.

I cannot wait to get mine, at the moment I am using a set of black cameo

Actually, that's the area where I believe in lots of practice since
"feel" is so fleeting.
For me, anyway.

It seems like the longer I lay off the better I hit it. I told Sparky
and Bill-o the other day that I might lay off for 6 more months and
then get my tour card.
Hell, I'm hittin it so sweet I might go back to my Hogan PCs.
Percussion Center, baby!

Seriously, I think my swing works best when I'm tight and restricted.
If I play a few days in a row I get more flexible and my swing gets a
bit longer and looser, and I start hitting the ball everywhere. But
right now, it's Perfect Impact! If I could just get rid of the dead
yanks (oops, I meant the Cory Lidles) I'd shoot nothin.

I guess they're still learning. With all that practice it's a wonder
Vijay doesn't win every tournament.
The carpenter doesn't practice driving a nail because he does it a
thousand times a day. Compare that to a round of golf where you take
less than 40 full swings. So it is harder to learn by doing in golf
... hence, the driving range.
Once you figure out your swing, ala Bruce Lietzke, you don't need to
keep beating balls.

I did some hammering earlier this year as I built a stoop for my back
porch. Even though it's been years since I've done construction work, I
never missed or bent a nail. Why? Because I learned a long time ago
how to do it correctly.
Perhaps there is a lesson in there about the advantages of a short
backswing?

Yeah, if you can get it in the hole from 50 yards and in like
you do.

Clearly, not everybody needs to practice a lot. Nelson didn't,
Lietzke didn't, you don't. But, OTOH, when Hogan had to hook
a 4-wood just so under and around a tree and run it to the
green, he had that and every other shot in his back pocket
because he had probably practiced it the day before. But of
course he was using practice in a much more focused way than
most, rehearsing very specific shot shapes and very specific
wind conditions. That's a little different than just proving
to yourself you can hit it with the center of the club again.

The nail analogy remids me of when a female friend of mine was trying to put
together something with a screwdriver. Before she started, she repeated, to
herself, "lefty loosy, righty tighty" to remind herself which way to turn
the screwdriver. There was a layer of unnecessary thought there and it
cracked me up. If there were hammering lessons, I bet there would be
instruments to measure where on the hammer the nail was hitting. Well, maybe
a slight, no an astronomical exaggeration.

But, anywhere you look, the adage is: Amateurs practice to get it right,
Pros practice to NOT get it wrong.

I think that if many of us had 8 hrs/day, we could all play some pretty
fantastic golf in a month. But, we might stop enjoying it. As an
analogy, I'll use myself and BlackJack. About 10 years ago, the
mathematics of winning at BJ caught my fancy. So, I practiced at home
(a lot) until I could count a deck of cards as fast as the cards could
be turned over. Then I learned to do 2 decks (including the math for
the fact that the real count is only 1/2 for the first deck as the
second. Then 3, then 4, then 5, until I could count 8 decks and carry
on a conversation. (Yes, I know, they cut off at least 3 decks in an 8
deck game, but you have to be ready) I went to the casino, and won. I
won at the rate the books said I would. Guess what? It wasn't fun
anymore. If I want to go to work, I go to work. If I want to have fun,
I go have fun. The casino wasn't fun anymore. So, I quit. I still go
to the casino, but now I play the slots. The dumb slots. Not BJ slots,
not draw poker slots. The penny slots. And guess what? It's fun
again!
