More pivoting of my data... my total FW hit is 55% When Fairways Hit GIR % 59% When Fairways Missed GIR % 29% So I get a GIR twice as often when hitting the FW as in the rough. My GIR % is 45%: When GIR was in FW % 70% When no GIR was in FW % 39% So 39% of the time I hit the ball into the FW and miss the green.

Let me do me ... my total fairways hit is 65% When I hit the fairway my GIR is 70% When I miss fairway my GIR is 39%. Im almost twice as much as well

If you're "lucky" enough to find the ball, you have to figure an average of a stroke penalty. In the fall, the rough is cut back and for the most part, you can get a pretty decent lie. In the winter, when the grass is dormant (we don't overseed), there's no real difference between fairway and rough. Best, Ken

My home course has some nasty rough, especially the stuff just off the fairway. Unfortunately, except for a handful of holes, if you're more than "just" off, you're in deep trouble. There's only 1 or 2 courses that I play regularly that aren't that punishing off the FW.

It depends on the golfcourse. If you play a course that has very short rough and few trees, then hitting the fairway is not really so important. If you are very strong and get dig the ball out of rough that is a little deep, then hitting fairways is not so important. If you are, however, playing a course that has forest on both sides of the fairway and the rough is borderline US Open style rough, then you better hit the darned fairway. David
