Subject: "Any Questions?"

When Tiger turned professional we had a pro at our club who was a
Tiger-basher before Tiger-bashing was cool. The Oldest Member and I
would often discuss Tiger's awesome amateur accomplishments and would
give the pro a list of rreasons why Tiger would soon dominate the tour.
I remember ragging on the pro during Tiger's first event at Milwaukee.
The pro said that Tiger would never get his tour card in just a few
events. Then Tiger picked up two wins later that year and the pro
claimed that Tiger could only win on resort courses, not tight setups
like those at the US Open or the PGA. "He's gonna have to show me
something!" our pro would say.

The Monday after the Tiger's 12-shot win in the 1997 Masters, our pro
was in the clubhouse as The Oldest Member walked by and quietly asked,
"Any questions?'

Later that year at the US Open, I remember Tiger teeing off on the
first hole, a dogleg left. He took the ball high up over the trees at
the corner and it came to rest in the fairway about 310 yards out. Ken
Venturi remarked, "Any questions?"

I think a Sports Illustrated cover later had the same words.

By now, I think all questions should have been answered.

Until this summer, I had some lingering doubts about the way he
managed his club selection and the golf course. No more. Now
that he has figured out that he can win majors just by playing
steady golf with no need for spectacular shots, he has elevated
his game yet another notch. Now, if he gets his driver fixed,
he can pummel you to death with his physical game; and, if he
doesn't, he can papercut you to death with his mental game.

He truly has learned to get out of his own way now. Scary.

I'd still like to see somebody better than Bob May give him
a memorable challenge, just because it would be good for the
game and fun to watch him respond. But of course that's not
up to Tiger to do.

I've always been a fan of TW's, but the last three tournaments have
elevated that. He's 60 under for them, and that includes two majors.
Now I just don't see that there has ever been a golfer of his caliber.

There are several that make good moves at him, but only one, or maybe
two days. No one matches his consistency over 72 holes.

I loved the question one reporter asked in his post round interview
yesterday...something on the order of: "do you ever feel sorry for the
other players out there?"

Tigers response: "No" with wry smile

he's got the killer instinct and now his game is back to match

My impression was that he was being nice to the reporter, and didn't
bother to tell him what an asinine question it was, and how insulting
to the other players.

I didn't get that impression with this reporter. He did have a little
problem with the reporter from China though that was harrassing him for
not signing children's autographs. Now his questions were asinine IMO

Don't know about that. Sometimes spectaculare shots are what he might need
to add to his arsenal (See the thread "Tiger's not a choker, but...")

I think he gets the ratings from people who aren't interested in
answers - they are just interested in watching.

That was my point in another thread although you said it better...

Tiger has the killer instinct... name one other player playing to day
that does? The only real example I can think of is Monty in match play.
Jack had it, Trevino had it, Palmer had it, Waton had it and many
others back then had it.

Though I didn't really get into golf or follow it until Jack was past
his prime, I suspect that skill wise Tiger is more complete. But Jack
can match him step for step with his will to win and his killer
instinct. Jack and Tiger both hit shots that really noone else of their
time can hit. Jack and Tiger both have done things that noone else
(besides the two of them) can do. Remember too that Jack basically
figured it all out... he led the way. Tiger followed Jack's road map.
It would be great to be able to see these two go head to head in their
primes playing the same equipment. I feel like they would match up very
well... both very long, both very good putters, etc. The outcome is too
close to call. I suspect if they played enough times the outcome could
be fairly well equal... but not exactly.

How do we determine the answer to this question?

Desire to win is not the same thing as killer instinct.

I sure most of them want to win... some badly.

DiMarco. Monty. Sergio. Corey Pavin. Vijay. Me.

I think all of these guys (and many more) want to win as much as Tiger.
Not everybody has the talent to go with it, however. And some guys
with lots of talent (Daly, Freddie, DLIII, Els, etc.) just don't seem
to have the drive to do great things. Imagine John Daly with Tiger's
work ethic. Or think how dominant Mike Tyson would have been if he was
single-mindedly focused on being the greatest boxer ever, instead of
worrying about buying big cars and partying all the time.

I would substitute Furyk for Sergio. Loved the local announcer in
Chicago who lambasted Sergio for his attire in the final pairing at the
Open Championship. Dressing like a banana certainly isn't the way to
intimidate Tiger Woods in the final round of a major.

I don't know how much of a killer instinct those guys had.

Do you measure killer instinct on how many times a player comes in
2nd?

How about how deep their competition was?

What do we look for to get a feel on how much killer instinct they had
compared to how much the new guys have?

One way to measure it is margin of victory. I'll give Lanny Wadkins
credit or one thing. When he led by 6 shots he wasn't coasting in. He
was trying to win by 8. And being the golf historian he is I am sure
that Tiger is familiar with what Sam Snead said on the subject:
"Never let up. The more you can win by, the more doubts you put in the
other players' minds the next time out."

Intimidation is a big part of the Tiger Mystique as well. When you get
on the tee with him he says, "Good luck" and that's it. You don't even
exist to him. Those guys must feel like a fly trying to stop a charging
elephant. I think a player like Trevino, a real Chatty Cathy type,
might put Tiger off his stroke. Like the Merry Mex said when a fellow
competitor told him that he wasn't out there to chit-chat, "You don't
have to talk. You just listen, I'll do all the talkin."

It's a good idea.

One of these guys paired up with him should mouth wedge Tiger all round
long.

If they didn't have it... it probably doesn't exist... :)

I don't think so... it's more about not backing up on Sunday. Getting
your competition down and then finishing them off. You can't easily
measure it, it's not easy to define, but most people know it when they
see it happening.

The new guys don't appear to have much if any... and that's the problem
wrt not providing Tiger any competition.
