Subject: Affordable housing at East Lake?

I just heard one of the announcers say that part of the revitalization
included "affordable" housing around the golf course. I call bullshit.
As I left the course Wednesday on the shuttle bus, I saw what couldn't
have been more than a 2000 square foot house that looked like it was
built in the 70's with a huge sign in the front yard: For Sale:
$439,000. Affordable for California? Yes. For Georgia? Not so much.

And $600K in North Texas buys you *alot* of house...and near year round
golf :)
(sure, it's cold for a few weeks...but Goretex fixes that)

We're looking to move 15 miles north to San Luis Obispo and looked at a
ranch style, 2200sf home this morning at $895k. It was a dump and would
need $100k in remodeling to be livable. Welcome to CA

The question I have is "why"? Why would you want to live in such a place?
My house is 6,500 square; on a ton of acreage, within 10 minutes of 3
nice courses, and is in a state that has free college for any resident
that can hold an 80 average through high school.

I'm a native, my wife is a native, and we like it here. We've looked at
other places to live (Scottsdale, FL, OR, etc) but can't find anywhere
with the weather that they have here. The housing prices don't bother us
as we've just been along for the ride over the years...

And besides, Ben doesn't live here any longer so our quality of life has
increased :)

A buddy of mine bought and sold two houses north of San Francisco over the
last 48 months and he made $1.4 million profit. He just bought a wonderful
home in Toronto and said he would never go back to CA.

If you want to be Ben's friend you have to live in a single-wide and drive
an AMC Javelin or Pacer. hahahahahah

if he had them both less than a couple of years then that's impressive.
Million dollar profits on real estate on single residences are not
uncommon in CA. Or should I say "was" not uncommon. Our market is going
through a bit of a correction now and values are dropping slightly.

First, there are some really lovely places to live in CA, some w/great
weather and vibrant cities to enjoy.

Second, no judgment against you is intended Head Shot, but most families
don't need a 6,500 square foot home. I can easily afford that large a house
in the relatively pricey greater Washington, DC area, but I preferred to
build a smaller home and invest (and use) my other money elsewhere. Frankly,
I don't even need a house as large as I currently have (3,400 sq. ft. on 4
lovely acres), I felt comfortable living in a much smaller home in a funky
neighborhood (1,850 sq. ft. on 1/4 acre) and enjoyed growing up in a home
w/960 sq. ft. (w/almost no yard space and only 1 bathroom) shared with 2
parents and 2 sisters. In my experience, the people inside the home are more
important than the home's girth. That said, if a large home is important to
anyone else, that's fine.

5 kids, a wife, 6 dogs, a nanny and her kid, 3 parrots, and some other
requirements (home office, home gym, art room, 6th kid and 2 grandkids on
holidays). When we had 2 kids; we only had a typical 2,600 sq ft center
hall colonial.

5 kids and a wife? Sounds like a pretty full life. Better than 5 wives and a
kid, though!

What kinds of parrots do you have? We are owned by 2 Timneh African Greys,
1 Goffin's Cockatoo and 1 Blue Quaker Parakeet. They're all different and
lovely animals.

We have an African Grey, a Double Yellow Headed Amazon; and an Umbrella
Cockatoo. Cockatoo is beyond loud; the Amazon sings and talks up a
storm; and hte African makes the coolest sounds (and does some talking).

When I was in Georgia two years ago, Eric and I played some golf
around north Atlanta. I was amazed how much house you could get for
250-300k on a golf course. Check out the internet. I'd be surprised
if housing has risen significantly there in the last two years.

Homes at Creekside Golf Course are running about $275K; and typically are 5
or 6 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. .

Creekside is a really nice course, BTW.

Well I'm sure its affordable if it's the house 10y right of the fairway
and 180y from the white tees.

Considering most suburban houses have appreciated 20-50% in that time, I
call that significant.

I live in suburban Atlanta; and my home has not appreciated 20% to 50% in
the last two years. It has appreciated perhaps 20% in the last 6.5 years
(built in 2000).

They announcers might be referring to the townhouse developments that
are near East Lake, as well as the Charlie Yates Executive Golf Course.

You don't need to explain or apologize for living in California,
especially to a guy who lives in freaking Atlanta. IMO, California is
the greatest state in the nation, hands down. Don't be fooled by the
shiny ABC broadcast, the immediate area surrounding East Lake GC is
OK...the surrounding areas are freaking urban war zones that make Watts
look like SLO. I have never wished I had a firearm in my car until
Wednesday when I got off one exit too soon on I-20 for TC parking.
Freaking scary. Also, Atlanta traffic would impress the most hardened
of native Angelinos, too.

You live in a single-wide and you are uppity about one of the wealthiest
cities in the USA? Perhaps you should boycott the companies that make
Atlanta their home. Start with The Home Depot, The Coca-Cola Company,
Georgia-Pacitic, Scientific Atlanta, Bellsouth, Cingular Wireless, Delta
Airlines, Lockheed Martin Marrietta, and McKesson. And boycott the
Democrats; because Senator Clinton has the Pandemic Management system being
developed here by Northrop Grumman for the CDC. You horse's ass.
BWHAHAHAHA

Of course you do. You like handouts and think rich people suck. You want
tax dollars from the other 49 States to pay for your power outages,
earthquake damage, and gun-grabs.

Boy, do you have issues with success. You should seek counseling.
Irrespective of how you prefer to put folks down on Usenet (which is a
fairly anonymous medium) to increase your feeling of self worth; I suspect
this jealousy of yours is driving portions of your real life in a negative
way. Just my two cents; even though I am by no means a psychiatrist.
Just observing your anger towards people who succeed in life.

My ramblings are no more inane than that hat you wear on the golf

It looks nice on you, though!

Other great lines: "Hey Wang, it's a parking lot!" "Hey Wang, they're
exclusive here, don't tell anyone you're Jewish."

We have a lot in common, except we had 4 kids, one dog, and 3 birds, in
a 2800 sq. ft. house. I hit out the same place you did.

Nowdays its 2 kids, one dog, and one parakeet in a 2100 sq. foot house.
Still dang noisy!!

The bad part is when the kids are fighting. On the one hand you want to
let them work it out; but on the other hand you want them to stop all the
yelling. We had 6 kids in the house and are down to 5; but the 6th is
always here and she has 2 little ones so the numbers are actually going up
and not down.

Yikes....I shudder to think of the noise level in that mansion of
yours.

6,500 square is by no means a mansion - just a large colonial with some
extra bedrooms and bathrooms. And the noise would be much less if it wasn't
for 2 fairly loud parrots and an extremely loud cockatoo. I usually hide in
my home office if I need some peace and quiet.
