It's been years since I tried to keep up with all that is razzle
dazzle in computer hardware.

Could someone give me a recommend on the latest and greatest video
adapter.

From what I can tell - it would be an nVidia .......... ? ? ?

I'm trying like hell to get Call of Duty 2 to work but it looks like
DirectX is gagging on my basic video adapater.

Thanks.

That's a fool's errand. First, ATI and NVidia keep leapfrogging each
other; whichever is the best now will be second best next month.

Second, the latest and greatest video setup will cost over $500. Well
over, if you really mean the greatest, which will involve multiple
expensive cards. But with the current price war, you can get a card
that gives excellent performance for around $200 or less.

Third, if you have a basic adapter now, then it's a very good bet that
your PC can't support the latest and greatest. If it's more than a
year or two old, it might not even have the right kind of slot
(PCI-Express) for the current best midrange card. And figure at least
a 500W power supply for a top of the line card, let alone a multiple
card setup. You mentioned DirectX problems, so you may need to
upgrade your software as well.

My advice is to go to one or both of tomshardware.com or anandtech.com
and read some reviews of cards in your price range, paying close
attention to whether they are compatible with your motherboard and
power supply.

Look at the packaging for the game. It should have minimum and
recommended hardware listed somewhere on the box.

If you have *either* an AGP or PCI-express slot, the 7600GS cards are on
sale everywhere. Pretty decent (mid-range) card for the money.
