In three weeks we have the usual comp.for charity three clubs and a
putter.
Fair enough golfer I have chosen; 5 Wood, 5 Iron,9 iron which is
different from last year,where I came no-where!
Hard fast links course in the Highlands so I just hope the Bunker sand
is soft enough.
Clubs have to be nominated a week before so no changing at the last
moment.
What would others take based on handicap and conditions?

Your club selection suggests that the course is long.

Four clubs is a lot for this kind of competition. With that many,
I'd certainly include a wedge that I was comfortable with chipping and
recovering from the sand.

I'd also walk through the course in my mind and decide which clubs
will get the job done. Think about the par-3 over a lake hole and
make sure you have a club that you can use for that hole.

It really depends on the course. Think of it in terms of how much you're
giving up, with a given set of four clubs, as you visualize how you're going
to play each hole. Whatever gives you the best odds of eliminating distance
gaps is what you need, along with due consideration for the par 3's. Then,
of course, you'll need some talent, to pull off shots with the wrong club in
your hand, much of the day.

My former men's club played this event yearly. Being my home course, it was
easy to figure out what I needed. 4-W, 5 and 8 iron, putter. I can move
the 4-W pretty far off the tee, back off on it for long par 3's and hit it
twice on par 5's. The 5 iron works from 180 down to 150. The 8 iron covers
the rest, including chipping. Having said that, my whole game is to get my
PW in play, ASAP, period. But, with only 4 clubs, I can't imagine ever
carrying it - simply gives up too much...

BTW, I won more than my share of these, partly because I'm a good
shot-inventor, but mostly because I was forced to THINK. For instance, one
year I shot 76 with 4 clubs and followed it up the next day with an 86, with
14. Funny game, golf. Good luck, have fun.

Driver, 6 iron, wedge, putter. I play with these clubs all the time.
Shot 2 under for
9 holes a couple of weeks ago with these clubs. My driver is 11
degrees, and I hit it
fairly well off the deck. 6 iron can reach most any par 3 depending how
you hit it.

I would probably choose a 5-wood, 7-iron, SW and putter.

Depends a bit on the overall length of the course, but I'd likely go with
5-wood (225 yards), 7-iron (155 yards), and Gap Wedge (100 yards). These
would cover a lot of distances for me, and coincidentally are my three
favorite chipping clubs. I'd also take a look at the par-3s - if several or
all are around a certain distance I would take a club for that distance.
For example, I'd be even more inclined to go with this setup if the par-3s
are 145, 160, 150, and 170 yards. However, if they were more like 160, 170,
185, and 195 yards, I'd probably go up to a 5 or 6 iron for my iron and
maybe change to a 9-iron for my short club.

It is a long course, thanks for the replies.Figured the wind will blow
this time of year so anything above a 5 W was out.I can hit a 3W but 5
is better to land the ball and stay.Anyway we'll see, unless plugged I
should get out of sand with a 9 Iron with a steep downswing.
I'll enjoy it and the dinner after! Regards

7 Iron (my 'go-to' club - I go back to that whenever I need a good shot)
3 Wood (good off tee or in a fairway)
Pitching Wedge (can use it in sand or woods)
Putter

I don't get it. On windy days my 5W gets less use than on other days
- high shots tend to drift more than low shots for me.

Seems odd don't it? but links up here has wide fairways and not heavy
rough this time of the year.
You know links has rolling fairways,if I land on a downslope[which is
pretty certain on links]I feel happier trying to get a 5 wood sweeping
it away rather than a 3 W.
It's just my game but I get your point. We'll see.Regards.
