Subject: empty chairs
Maybe it's just that it's been a long and somewhat dubious weekend and I've
watched mnore TV golf than usual but I couldn't help notice all those empty
chairs in the stands behind the players -- on the PGA tour, the senior tour,
and the LPGA -- even with two of the top players in the world dueling it out
there were spaces in thestands as fans croweded 10 deep in other areas. I'm
curious about those grandstands -- I presume those things with the awnings
and chairs are not for the general public -- who are they for? Looking at
the Boston event I only saw one "normal" grandstand -- on 18. It's been a
long time since I've attended a PGA tour event. I've been to several USGA
and PGA of America events recently and all have had public grandstands
behind just about every green. The only "private" grandstands I remember
were one behind 17 at the PGA and one in someone's back yard at the 2003 US
Open. I've considered attending more events next year, when I'll probably
have more time flexibility to do it, but the thought of standing around in
areas with lousy views while the best viewing areas go to empty chairs
doesn't really appeal. For those who have bene to PGA tour events of
late -- what are the viewing and seating opportunities for the general
public?

I was just at the Jeld-Wen Champions Tour event last weekend in Portland and
they had both public access stands and Corporate sponsored private viewing
areas. Attendance at the Jeld-Wen was rather disappointing so there were
lots of empty seats anyway.

I personally enjoyed the corporate areas on three of the days I was there
since I could get cold beer there and not in the Volunteer Headquarters.
Fortunately I know the pro at Wildhorse (thanks, Scott!) now and he let me
in their private viewing area. It's definitely a nice place to watch the
tournament. They had flat screen TV's on the poles holding up the tent.

One of the big problems with the seating areas behind the 16th and 18th
greens was that there was no shade. The temps were in the 90's and quite
warm for us as we usually only get about 15 days like that a year.

Those chairs represent people who have gone to the
restroom..............and once there, decided it was more interesting in
the crapper than back at their seats.
