Subject: Yes, Virginia - There Really is a Bad One-Putt
I parred a par 4 yesterday hitting the following shots

Driver off the tee
Full PW approach
LW pitch
1-Putt

The only misleading thing about this is that the order of the shots was

Driver
PW
Putt
LW Pitch

Putted off the green (and down the hill) and then holed out a perfect little
LW for par.

dave

ps. In my own defense the pin was cut less than 3 paces from the front/right
edge of the green and basically on the false front slope. 2 players out of
our 3-some putted off the green.

Technically that's a 2-putt (as they count putts for stats, at least).

Pretty sure that still counts as a 2 putt if your first putt was from
the green.

That is an interesting question. How do the PGA Tour stats folks handle this
situation? I'm guessing that a putt is only a stroke made from the putting
surface (and that would include Phil's flop shot from the green on Friday).
But I can imagine that it might be all strokes taken after the first stroke
from the putting surface.

Then I take it that if one putts the ball off the green, then chips
back on and one putts...that is counted as three. Interesting.

Even more interesting if one's first putt trundled off the green and into a
hazard.

I've seen it happen more than once, both on TOUR and in "civilian golf."
I've even seen it in a US Open.

And let's say that the right choice is to declare an unplayable lie and
replay the shot with a penalty stroke. So the penalty stroke is then a putt.
Cool.

dave

ps. I once played a ball out of a greenside bunker and then proceeded to
putt the ball back into that same bunker into the exact area that I had just
raked. Fortunately I had done a decent job.

That's how the Tour counts putts. But that's not a ROG thing - I
count them the most useful way to evaluate my game. And this case,
he counted in the way that tells the best story.

And it was a great story!
