I'm going to get him to tee up everything for a while, on the range, on the course ... so that he can learn to hit the ball without worrying about fat shots. I think that hitting the ground shapes people's swings too early in the process of learning the fundamentals. Any thoughts?

Yes, teeing up everywhere on the course (except the green) worked well for my grandchildren when I was teaching them. They figured out pretty quickly on their own that 'real golfers' hit off the turf in the fairway, so they began doing that about round 2. What I have found is that they tend to make thin shots rather than fat shots, because for some reason, hitting under the ball and scraping the ground ('taking a divot' so to speak) was unnatural to them. So I do emphasize that for them (as well as telling them it is ok to break the tee on the first drive).

If they are hitting thin naturally, that seems cool to me, but my thought is that if kids or beginners in general, are hitting thin because of having hit fat shots before they can hit some good teed up balls, then they will continue to shy away from taking a divot and maybe exaggerate things in their swing to avoid hitting the ground.

The one that is 12 is already hitting the ball pretty well, the 9 yo is another thing. But its fun and I get to spend time with em. This evening is soccer practice so I wear my shades and check all the soccer mom's out. Best Daveb
