I started thinking about another measure of progress and threw together a function in my handicap spreadsheet to calculate my "reverse" handicap. IOW, instead of taking my BEST 10 of 20 differentials, I'll take the WORST and see what it is. I'm currently a 4.5 index (my "good" handicap") and while it's not really better than last year, it sure feels like I'm playing better. Turns out I am. My "Bad" handicap is only 8.2, while last year it was 9.2. I looked back over the last 2 or 3 years when my good handicap went pretty close to what it is now, and I had several times when I was around a 5, but my "bad" handicap was 10 or 11. In fact, I had a 3.9/9.1 combo at one time, which tells me that I could go low, but still had several bad rounds. IOW, I'm much more consistent than I have been in the past. Anyone else do this?

I can remember when San Diego Chargers President, Dean Spanos, won both the Bob Hope and Pebble pro-ams in the same year. He's the all-time biggest sandbagger in pro-am history. Here's what it says on the Chargers web page: ================ Dean's busy career in business and the National Football League hasn't hampered his status as one of the nation's most successful amateur golfers. An avid golfer since his college years, he has been on the winning team in five Pro-Am tournaments, including back-to-back wins in 1990 at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and the AT&T National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach with partner Hubert Green. He successfully defended his title at the Hope Classic in 1991. Spanos and Green also won the Bing Crosby Pro-Am at Pebble Beach in 1985, where Dean was awarded the "Most Valuable Amateur" trophy for supplying the most help to his professional partner. His first win came in the 1985 Senior Players Reunion Pro-Am in Dallas, teaming with Billy Casper.

Current index 8.4, trending 9.0, reverse handicap trend 16.8. Ugh, some real stinkers in there. FWIW, the pope of slope suggests using this to find a good better ball partner, he calls it the "anti-handicap". See http://www.popeofslope.com/guidelines/anti.html

I just played in a Chicago quota tournament - I made my quota, got a prize - but raised my handicap. Very inconsistent round.

Easy to be 3x worse when you're only a 1.8! I think total # of strokes is more telling.

Here's what I came up with for my scores as of a month or so ago.. Haven't done the up to date one yet. 9.9/14.9 with average esc adjusted scores of 80.5/85.9 I think this is one of the most interesting ideas in RMD in quite some time... :)

Not nearly as much spread as I was expecting. I thought my bad handicap would be closer to 20, because when I stink up the place I don't play around. But it's only three strokes worse than my good handicap. I'm thinking that a close differential, like mine of 3.0, means that you're stuck in a rut. No real progress is being made, no great rounds to speak of, but no horrible ones, either. And now that I think about it, that's how my game has felt, recently. I've hit a wall that I won't get past until I learn how to hit my irons. Thanks for this post. Very interesting.

Besides, I was playing pretty well at RSG-NW. My last 4 rounds are: 97, 83, 78, 95. Talk about steady ... NOT!

Over the past two years my index has varied between 5.0 and 7.6. During this same time period my reverse index varied between 9.0 and 12.5. The difference between the indexes at any point in time varied between 3.0 and 5.7. Interestingly, the whole thing looks kind of like a sine wave, gently moving up and down fundamentally in unison - and going nowhere. dave

Not sure I'd want to bother on a regular basis (and I didn't go back to last year) ... but just as a point of reference, I'm currently at 9.2 and based on my worst 20 scores it would be 16.6. Not bad for me ... still better than bogey (barely) and it includes couple of 92s (yuck) shot on vacation at a fairly tough mountain course. Interesting idea. 9.1 using the 10 best. 15.0 using the 10 worst. Of course Equitable Stroke Control prevented the a lot of the bad ones from being *really* bad. Come to think of it, Equitable Stroke Control is what made a lot of the good ones good instead of bad. gary hayenga
