'Twas news to me so I figured it was news to many. Kinda adds fuel to
the Wie fires.

"Sony officials should pencil him in for a sponsor's exemption
next year. Fujikawa didn't get a free pass this year -- he made it

through the qualifier."

Ah, so *that's* why The Golf Channel hasn't contacted me with a
television
bid for RSG-Ohio?

Actually, I think the US Amateur usually *IS* the most exciting
tournament
of the year on the TV. Less hype, real stories, real golf.

I respectfully disagree, Howard.

I look at this akin to someone having an attainable role model. There
is no way I can compare my game to that of a PGA member. But, to see
someone who may have a regular job that happens to be a damned good
golfer gives me something I can more closely relate to.

amateur standing has not diminished, IMHO.

Where I *do* agree with you is that in many sports, the worship is
lavished on the pro athelete. (The NBA and MLB are good examples of
this.) I just don't think the same holds true for Golf.

I don't think your premise is true. The amateurs for a while
started
performing worse and not making cuts. It made them seem a bit out
of place. These days I more are making the cut and therefor returning
to a place of attention. It's hard for the networks to show the
amateurs when they don't play on the weekend. And they still have
them stay at the Butler Cabin during the week. And there is still the
top amateur award given before the awarding of the green jacket.

That said, I suspect that AGNC could expand their commitment to
amateurs by including some of the other US Amateurs such as the
senior and womens.

Strange thinking, Howard. The attraction of qualifing for
the Masters as an amateur is the opportunity to play in
the tournament, period, and I don't think that has
diminished at all.

The prestige of winning the US Amateur hasn't diminished
much either, and would seem to me to be a pretty big deal
in and of itself, aside from the Masters invite.

So, I would have to think that if Tadd wasn't planning to
compete in the US Amateur, perhaps there are reasons
other than the fact that top amatuer at the Masters might
not be a big deal anymore. I'm not sure that top amateur
at the Masters ever really was a big deal, except to
Bobby Jones.

Yes, he did qualify and that makes his performance even more
impressive. He also qualified for the US Open last year. If he
shuold miss trying to qualify next year for the Sony tournament, he
should definitely get a sponsor's exemption.

He did not announce plans to play the US Amateur, although he did
say that he would play the junior amateur, I believe. It would be
great to see him qualify for Augusta next year.

At one time the amateurs at The Masters seemed to be a bigger deal
than today. I suspect society has changed and the prestige of being a
top amateur has dropped - if you're not Tour quality, you're not good
enough.

Too bad.

Hmmm. How many exemptions are there? Is it one or the other?

Wie's going to college anyway. She'll be rushing sororities or
whatever this time next year.
