Subject: Upgrade to new clubs?
So, when do you decide to get new clubs? I have Cleveland TA7 irons
that are 7 years old. Now, I like GolfTown a lot :) They have Mizuno
MX-23 irons that are ready for me to take home. But why? Forged vs
Cast, but is there any good reason to get new clubs? Is this an
upgrade? Has technology changed in 7 years? I'm really trying to
convince myself I should get them, but then again, why?

So, for all you club people that like getting new ones every year, or
two, or three, or whatever, why do you do it? And, if anyone has a
specific reason to change clubs please let me know.

Some personal details. I'm a 8 handicap that doesn't have a lot of
time to practice anymore. I had Titleist 990's before the TA7s but
only playing once every other week did not really like the none-
forgiveness of the 990s. Anyway, MX-23 vs TA7s... not sure if there
are reasons to get it other then I really like them :)

Miss Anne Thrope has one that's never been used for sale on eBay.

There are a ton of DCIs on eBay, Gold, Black, Oversize, 822s, even.
They are often a very good value and in decent shape. I've gotten a
wide variety of Titleist irons for about $7-10 a club, higher for the
shorter irons which always are at a premium because of scarcity.

I'm the wrong person to ask as I love swapping out clubs. But the
advice here in the thread so far is good. If you like how you strike
the ball, consider new
grips and shafts first. That could make a huge difference in your
game. Even matching your shafts to your swing speed will save you a
ton of money over starting fresh with new clubs.

I often pick up partial sets on eBay just to test a set out. I did
that recently getting rid of my Titleist DCIs and ending up wiht Nike
Forged Blades. The eBay route is pretty easy as you can buy a 6 iron
usually very cheap (as it's often a demo club), and if you like it,
buy the rest online or through a dealer. Selling clubs back on eBay
is
easy, too. Clean them up, put a new grip on it, and you almost always
get what you bought it for or more. I recently bought a 3-PW of the
Nike Blades for $300, then sold the 3, 4, and 5 (as I don't use
them),
for $35 - $40 a piece. Made my new/used set pretty cheap.

Half the fun for me with golf is the messing around with equipment.
But I'd think most folks get 3-4 seasons out of clubs before even
dreaming of replacing them. And if things are going okay, then just
regrip and reshaft. Now, if things are going poorly, new gear is
sometime a good impetus for working harder on the game.

Good luck,
Ed

Hey fucknuts. It's the indian, not the arrows. Any old clubs will work
as well as this new crap you've been brainwashed into buying. My clubs
are 20 years old and the ones that have broken i replaced with good will
clubs for a buck or two each.

i had a set of Mizuno mx-11's and used them for 4 years, and last year i saw
an ad in the paper for callaway x-16's, and were used a couple of times, i
went and looked at them and they were as he said. i bought them for $350, i
wouldn't say that they are supirior to the mizunos, or i hit them farther or
better, but the price was too good to pass up, and i sold my Mizuno's for
$200, so for $150 i got a brand new set.

bought a new set of DCI's in 95, got them fitted and everything, they were
great, I was about a 13 handicap and could hit very predictable shots and I
was confident with the clubs. Got my graduate degree in 2000 and decided it
was time to upgrade. Bought a set of 990's...could hit about 1 out of ten
as good as the DCI's, ditched them and got some Ping I3's. Nice club, but
at least a club and a half shorter, couldn't get used to them. Got a set of
Mizuno comp EZ's, forged, felt good to swing. I played ok with them, but
nothing like the DCI's still. I just can't get the "old feel" back. I've
tried every ball under the sun with no help. I finally have a set of Nike
NDS irons I got at the end of last season and only played them once so I
can't really be objective. Boy what I'd give for those old DCI's. You
don't know what you've got til it's gone rings true.

Several years ago I tried out an ancient set of Hogan Director irons that
(totally unexpectedly) I liked better than my Tommy Armour 845 cavity backs.
I ended up with a 1995 vintage set of Hogan Apex musclebacks (channelback
model) that I played for several years.

Not long ago I realized that because

1) I am a practice hound
2) The club where I belong has free range balls
3) Weather/conditions has us stuck on the mats roughly 5 months/year

I had significantly worn the leading edge of a number of my irons. I tried
out a dozen or more irons (some borrowed, some bought, some built) and I
really wanted to believe that a set of cast (better wear on the mats) cavity
backs would be the trick for me. When you are doing an exercise like this
and you have a preferred outcome, you tend to get that outcome.

I'll be damned if I absolutely failed to find a set of irons that I like
better than my Hogan Apex Channelbacks. It is significant to note that 5i is
the longest club in this set of irons. I was not looking for this answer,
but that is the answer that I got. My index bounces around in the 5.5 to 7.5
range.

I will say that I also found that 'moderate cavity backs' (like Cleveland
TA3's or Titleist DCi 762's) were not all that much different than blades in
terms of forgiveness, workability, or feel. However 'true game improvement
cavity backs', the kind that typically have a hollow area between the rear
of the club and the 'back of the face' (like the Callaway X-18) - that was a
different story. Those clubs (IMHO) really are different. In fact that
seemed like hybrids to me and if I wanted to go in that direction I would be
inclined to just add a few more hybrids to replace my 5i/6i7i.

In the world of irons I just don't think that things have changed that much
over the past 7-10 years (IMHO).

Not, nope between those clubs.

I can't answer that question. That idea of changing clubs connotes
utter stupidity to me.

If the clubs you have now fit well, still have grooves, then regrip them
and march onward. Wait, you do regrip every year, right? Not
regripping would be a serious mistake if you expect to get the most of
your clubs.
