I realize that this is mostly distinction without difference - but what
IS the difference, technically speaking, between a tournament and a
championship?

The subject came up during the NCAA Final Four Tournament and reverted
to golf.

The Masters is a tournament. The rest of the Grand Slam events are
championships. Right?

How would you define the difference? If there is one.

(from a website)
The Augusta National Golf Club officially opened in January 1933. In
the spring of 1934, Bobby invited some of his friends, who also
happened to be the best golfers in the world, to play on his course in
the first "Annual Invitation Tournament". It was initially suggested
that the tournament be called "The Masters", but Bobby thought that
name "too presumptuous". Although Jones disliked the name and would
refer to it as the "so-called Masters" for years to come, the name The
Masters was quickly adopted by fans and the press.

Bobby Jones bristled when The Masters was referred to as "a
championship", because he felt it was not the championship of
anything. However, because of his involvement, the quality of the golf
course, the quality of the field and the history the tournament has
generated, The Masters has evolved into a major championship coveted
by the greatest golfers in the world.

And besides, if they changed it to a "championship," they couldn't call it a
"tunamint" any longer.

A "championship" produces a champion of some league or organization or
nation or something. Such as the PGA champion, the US champion, or
the British champion.

What would be the domain of the Masters Champion?

Club Champion. Kinda agree with you, just repeating what Miller had
said.
