Subject: Torrey South in '08??
Will this sea level 7568 yard beast be a par 70 in '08?!? Could the
USGA be this dastardly an organization? Hell, why not gorw the rough
to 9", make all the greens rodan style, and narrow the fairways to 22
yards. Anyway, the par 5's are as follows:

#6 - 560
#9 - 613
#13 - 541
#18 - 571

Not sure of the tee layouts, but the obvious candidates are six and 13
- one on the front and one on the back converted to par fours. Shave
~ 60 and 40 yards per hole, and you've still got close to 7500 yards.
This is gonna be awesome! Who's got the extrees?

Was it 2000 when the US Open was at Pebble Beach? They had 2
tournaments
there that year.

I wish I could remember where, but I just read over the weekend that the
USGA has already picked which of the two will be made 4s, and that they will
play significantly shorter than their current yardage. (Nor can I remember
which two they were.)

Another question about this layout is whether the Tour has rescinded their
rule, or if the rule never really existed, that the same course could not be
used twice in the same year for different events. I remember one year -
could it have been '95? - when the LA Open had to be moved away from Riviera
because the PGA Championship was being played there that year.

It could have been a contractual thing with the PGA, rather than a Tour
rule, I suppose.

The '95 La Open might have been conditioning the course for the PGA
Championship. Your rule probably isn't as there are three organizations in
the mix - PGA Tour, PGA of America, and the USGA - and counter examples -
Crosby and US Open at Pebble Beach.

Considering that three of those par fives are easily reachable in two by
most pro golfers, you can bet that the USGA will convert a couple of them to
par fours.

I mean, think about it. #18, which is the second longest of the four par
fives, is routinely reached in two (if the player finds the fairway off the
tee). So you KNOW the shorter two are not going to be par fives when the
USGA circus comes to town.
