I remember at the start of the year, everybody here at RSG said he was washedup and an old 30!!! HAHA. BTW - Tiger says he thinks federer should have won. http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=2708184 (snip) Woods won the award over San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, with tennis great Roger Federer a distant third. The 31-year-old Woods won for the fourth time in his career, tying the record set by Lance Armstrong, who won the last four years. While pleased to hear he had won the award, Woods was perplexed it did not go to his good friend Federer, who continues to dominate tennis. Woods was in Federer's box at Flushing Meadows when the Swiss star captured the U.S. Open title. "What he's done in tennis, I think, is far greater than what I've done in golf," Woods said. "He's lost what ... five matches in three years? That's pretty good." Federer has actually lost a few more than that, but not many. His record in 2006 was an amazing 92-5, including 12 singles titles. Woods received 260 points from sports editors around the country. Tomlinson, who has already set an NFL record of 31 touchdowns with one regular-season game left, was second with 230 points. Federer, who won three Grand Slam titles and lost in the final at the French Open, had 110 points. Rounding out the top of the list were Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade (40 points) and St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols and NL home run champion Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies (20 points each). I never thought that. However, I did think he had visions of blonde beavers dancing in his head, which might have affected his concentration. ;-{

There are too many variables that account for a running back's success, namely his offensive line (ask Sean Alexander b4 and after Steve Hutchinson), the type of offense, turf, etc. Whereas, with TW, his victories were strictly on his own, against a field that has improved through the years. You factor his father's death and the confidence factor of a swing change, then TW's achievement is even more rekable. It would have been understandable had TW incurred a bad year. Imagine David Duvall with similar circumstances. -Greg

I would have thought the AP was more oriented toward the major sports, i.e. football, basketball, and baseball, with an occasional nod to soccer and hockey. But in the last ten years, Tiger has four and Lance Armstrong has four --- and both of them are participants in what most people consider recreational activities, rather than athletics. I know cycling can be brutally hard, but most Americans never watch it, and most of the others only watch it once a year, and then only when an American is contending. How many can even name an important bike race other than the TdF? I would have given it to LT this year. Amazingly, the last football player to win it was Joe Montana, in 1990. I moved to SF in 1980, and was easily able to get season tickets for the Niners, because they had sucked so bad for so long. But they had a new coach and a new QB, and they started doing. Nothing beats watching the best ever during their prime.

It's real hard to give the award to football players. The team wins with large offensive, defensive, special teams players, & coaching staffs. Look at how the team that Donovan McNabb was "carrying on his back" has done since he left with a season ending injury...
