As of September 2006 the airport went to just charter operations. I
assume the runways are out of bounds.

too bad this one doesn't make you cross the speedway like the airport
makes you cross taxiways.

You do, actually. There are a few holes on the infield -- four I
think? (Without going back to look at the Google picture.) You drive
through a tunnel UNDER the actual racetrack so I guess technically you
don't cross it.

Well, I've played a course where you play through a race track (i.e. tee off
outside the track hitting over it and onto the infield, then play across the
infield and play your approach over the track again to the green). It's a 9
holer in, believe it or not Beaver Utah, and the race track is for horse
racing (harness racing actually) had the sorriest set of rental clubs I've
ever been stuck with. I asked the guy in the clubhouse what happened when
they were using the track, and he said, "well most folks around here know
when race day is and they don't play".

I bet tourists like to play golf inside the Indianapolis Speedway
though.

I would doubt the course is open on race days. Maybe during testing.

From Brickyardcrossing.com

Blackout dates are as follows:
May 13, 14, 20, 21 26 and 28. Indy 500
June 30 July 1 and 2 USGP
August 4, 5, and 6th. Allstate 400 at the Brickyard

So you probably could catch some testing.

Tiger would still be able to pick out a shutter click through the
engine noise.

Kind of reminds me of this one.

I've played it before. I have to say I never realized how big the
Speedway was until I was on the infield.

Tower:"Air India, hold at outer maker.
We have a foursome playing through
runway three."
AI :"Copy that tower. Must have sliced."
