They mowed the fairways!

Now there are fairways. During the winter golfing season they mow the
greens and tees here and leave the rest to the four legged mowers. So
while the course is playable and the grass is quite short it is unicut
because well it is hard to train the deer to only eat the fairway
portion of the grass. Now that spring has sprung and the cherry trees
are in full bloom, the grass will start to grow faster than the deer
can eat it. Ahhh I love spring.

With springs arrival the old guys have precious few days of winter
golf left. Now that the grass mowed and the last of the detritus from
winter cleaned up the courses should be playable without lift clean
and cheat any day now. But every year the courses leave the winter
rules sign out for a little longer than the year before. Inevitably I
will get paired with someone who thinks it is a good thing and wonders
why I (and the buds) play the ball down when the sign says you can
move it.

Played last Saturday with one of my buds. We had the course almost to
ourselves and it was good. The eagles that nest behind the 4th green
were in fine forum. One of them got me with a squawk (screech don't
know what else to call the noise they make) during a putt on the 4th
green and caused me to miss...yep that is my excuse and I'm sticking
with it. They were flying low and one landed on the 5th hole between
the tee and green (par 3). It didn't care at all about the golfers and
we walked within 20 feet of it. Unfortunately I didn't have a camera,
it would have been a great shot even without a good lens. I have to
remember to throw the camera in the bag more often.

Cleaned out the bag today. Gone are the winter balls. The crappy
distance balls given as gifts by nongolfing relatives. The well worn
balls that were found while searching for your own. Gone is the tuque
and the extra sweater. Hell maybe next game I won't even wear my
Oregon Mudders. Got to love spring.

I'd be up for it. I wouldn't mind getting up to try Crown Isle, and
I'm happy to set something up at Morningstar.

Hey Mike,

Is one of your men's clubs at Tri Mountain? I've joined Mint Valley's
but have thought about changing. They play the same game each Sat.
and Sunday, weekend after weekend.

Big Yawn!

What's the other club you belong to?

Yes, Greg I play at Tri-Mtn in Ridgefield, just down the road from you.
They have a website with the Saturday schedule here:

http://www.trimountaingolf.com

Click on the Men's Club link and then the Weekly schedule.

They also have some games during the week in the summer but not on Sunday.

I don't know if you met George Moore at RSG-NW but he also plays out there.

I've been playing through the winter but I only have to deal with a little
rain, mud, and maybe some elk foot prints and "loose impediments".

Speaking of winter rules, I am in two different Men's clubs where one plays
it down year 'round and the other goes by what the sign says. The club that
plays it down is generally a drier cousrse as it is built mostly on sand,
but I still get crappy lies with grass that is uneven. Especially this time
of year when some grass is starting to grow and then right next to the ball
is some dormant stuff. If I could keep the ball on the fairway it might
help.

Bear,

I was hoping they would get the mowers out at Morningstar this week.
They need the cutting, but there are some sloppy patches to navigate.

I managed to tee off at 4:45 on Saturday and get in a quick 16 - with
a little more hustle I may have done the full loop.

I think I will keep the winter balls in play for a few weeks - those
greens are going to be receptive for awhile.

I guess I should give Morningstar another try one of these days.

Played it a couple of years ago and I can't say I was very happy when
I finished the round. It was a warm summers day with temps in the 30's
and the two of us walked. That was our first mistake. Some of the
hoofs between green and tee were a little excessive to say the least.
We ended up on the wrong tee once and the couple we were playing with
did it another time. On one par 5 I stripped the ball long and
straight where we thought the fairway went. Turns out we were wrong
:(. Never did find it in the lateral. The best part of the round was
the couple we were paired with.

I'm just an hour north of Morningstar so may be a mini RSG Vancouver
Island this year.
