Its always for money or how fast we can get aroiund. Rarely if ever do we ever play anything besides stroke play. Which is a shame when there are so many variatiions to golf that are so much fun. My brother and I will often play a round of Three Ball on a local par three nine hole cousre with a single 8 iron each. or Captains Choice with some people new to the game. All just for the fun of it. Or just a good old round of Match play with nothing more riding on it than who pays for a drink at the 19th hole. The Euros have not only the American pros beat at the Ryder Cup but in the fun department as well. Phil

The US team had the top three ranked players in the world. I don't think that it was the worst US team ever. They did, however, run in to a very strong european team which relishes this format and has a lot of fun while playing. Perhaps it was simply a matter of attitude? David

For someone who didn't watch, the implication would be that the other players must have been bad enough to drag the team down. But it wasn't the case. >They did, however, run in to >a very strong european team which relishes this format and has a lot >of fun while playing. Perhaps it was simply a matter of attitude? Tiger works best with a serious attitude. But Phil jokes around - which doesn't help him at Ryder's Cups.

They seem to be missing something. They don't seem to have the capability to play with another human being as a team even if they are from their own country. They seem to lack any kind of heart. Take them out of their money driven individualistic environment and they look like ducks out of water. Personally I actually hope to god they win in Kentucky..... it is not good for the game when the US lose all the time. However I just cannot for the life of me see what they can do to turn things around. They certainly need to get players playing more team events for a start. And more matchplay too. -- Howard

Take away the big purses and the scoreboards, and they seem unable to find a point to, or enthusiasm for, the game. Take away medal play scoreboards from the Europeans, and they seem to remember the pick up, one on one games that they enjoyed as kids. Here in the US we start youngsters off in middle school on tournaments that are all medal play. Much earlier than the Europeans, and much more one dimensional. Our kids are obsessed with handicaps and statistics, and never really play the game for sheer, lighthearted fun. I suggest we start having some school and college matches based on match play, rather than stroke play, and get it back into the culture. You only had to look at the grim faces of the Americans, even when they were winning, and compare these with the energy that the Europeans got from this format, to see the difference. William Clark

We love to win this thing but the fun goes when we win too often and see the attitude of the US players being so tortured. Players here grow up through the club system where they play all kinds of competitions on a weekly basis, foursomes, four balls, stableford, matchplay etc. because it is a GAME. It seems that far too many players in the US go straight to college scholarships and are brain washed into that ME ME ME ME attitude exemplified by Tiger. -- Howard

I think you make an excellent point, Howard. Other than certain RSG friends, Match-Play as a format, is virtually unknown here. I've often had to explain it to playing companions. David

Indeed. I was fortunate to spend all my formative years in golf playing match-play. Only time of the year I remember king a card was in the Junior Championship. David

It is analogous to the best of 18 points, instead of putting together an entire round. B. tin

It seems to me the U.S. plays like it is an exhibition and the Europeans play like it is a major championship.
