No it aint when you find your bal plugged beneath the lip of a cavernous bunker! There are lies that are far worse than that. The worst lies are the ones we tell ourselves about the game. Like "If I have a perfect swing I'll be a better player" or "Technology improves scores". Now these are some seriously bad lies. Because they're the hardest to get out of! Since 1975 up 'til 2004 75% of every golfer never broke 90. Now that number is 72%. Woopee! All the technology and world class instruction and balls that don't hook or slice and training aids coming out the yin tang. And the number of players that now break 90 has went up by a wopping 3% in over 30 years! These lies we tell ourselves about buying a better game are fantasies and serve only to limit out true potential as players. A good dose of inner game reality is long over due in my humbly biased opinion! It has been my direct experience that a strong mental game is superior to every other form of golf instruction, education, training and practice combined. Give me a player with the pretty swing and a well grooved swing path or a guy who has a home made swing and a killer mental toughness and I'll take player number two everyday! They say the game is all in your mind...well I like to say it's all in your mind's eye. Wade Pearse www.golf-mental-game-coach.com

Right, that's why they're talking about rolling back the golf ball for the past 5 years, because new technology doesn't mean anything. IDIOT!

They think that a new set of $1000 clubs will knock 5 strokes off their game. But then all americans are idiots. They are more worried about terrorists than the drunk driver who lives down the street.

The golfers I know would be knocking pople down to get to the store if they could buy equipment that improved their game by 12%. (Yes, I'm just playing with the numbers.)

What percentage of posters on rsg can write using correct basic English. Probably 75%.

Without having a control group, or knowledge of the population sample, or a measure of the difficulty of the course, your statement is dishonest at best. Everybody and their mother "plays" golf now, so of course the average score wouldn't go down. A real measure of if technology improves scores is to have a control group before and after the technology improvement. Since we don't have that, let's use common sense. Bigger headed drivers, perimeter weighted irons, and hybrid clubs are ALL easier to hit (Easier=mishits aren't as punishing with these clubs and well struck balls go farther) than their counterparts of 10, 20, and 30 years ago. So everything else being equal, scores would go down because of it.

I wonder what percentage of all golfers (defined as people who play at least 6 times per year, 18 holes, let's say) could, if they played by the rules of golf at an average course (slope=113), could produce a score under 90. My guess is fewer than 10 percent. Also sort of along the lines of what the op mentioned, what percentages of golfers have ever broken 100, 90, 80, par etc. Does anyone know of a source for statistical info like this?

Make sure to find out what the assumptions were used in defining "golfer", and even what rules the people polled were using.
