Subject: The Grip - Poll
So just got back from my 1st range session of the year (haven't hit a
ball in the air since October)....

With my driver, I was pushing just about everything. I then tried my
"left hand only" drill where I swing aggressively with just my left
arm. It got a little after that, but then still inconsistent. I
"felt" like the hands weren't squaring and then releasing the club, so
I switched my grip temporarily to the overlap (I am a career-long
interlocker).

The release actually felt alot better and my ball flight started to
straighten out.

So, here's my question. What grip do you all think gives a person to
square and release the clubhead - the overlap or interlock? Has
anybody ever changed styles?

Thanks in advanced for you opinions.

Hi tin,

No bother at all! :0)

that's just the opinion I wanted. Yes, having not hit a golf ball for
months, I was hoping (since today is my day off), that I'd get
immediate results, and you're right. The grip change "felt" different
and felt like the club released better.

For me, after a long layoff, the hands need to get "re-educated"
again.

I think the best grip for me is the one I have on reality.

No single technique will guarantee any particular result. Once you
understand that, you can then move on to the next lesson. Practice is the
only method that we have to increase our ability.

You begin your post with saying that you're out of practice. This implies
that you know what practice is for and you know what being out of practice
will result in. It also implies that whatever "solution" you're looking for
is simply an excuse for not getting back into practice.

Or, since you are out of practice, your brain got to thinking about other
things and sort of shut down the parts that were active while you were in
practice. As you started to practice again, you tried to do the same things
you did before but your brain simply has adapted to it and the reaction is
that there's nothing new, it appears to be less effective. Changing to a
slightly different method will wake up different parts of the brain so that
it becomes new again, it will appear to be more effective.

I think it's a function of your perception. You think it's better when in
fact it's just different. You think that you're out of practice when in fact
you've never known what being into practice truly means.

Sorry to bother you.

Not sure about the release part of the grip ... I changed from interlock to
overlap quite some time ago (10-15 years or so). The reason was that the
overlap was just more comfortable for me. The interlock caused too much
irritation on those two interlocking fingers.
