Subject: Suggestions on Public Golf Courses in Dallas
I'm going to be with a group in last Feb in Dallas - probably 12 of us
- and am thinking of a 2 or 3 day golf outing. We want to pick nice but
not too pricey (say less than $100) courses - and given we are all
flying in - perhaps stick reasonably close to DFW airport.
The courses that seem interesting so far are Lantana, Bear Creek, Texas
Star, Bridlewood

Any suggestions???
Thanks

I'm sorry I missed the original. You're already booked into
Cowboys, so that's good.

As for the second choice, it has to be Texas Star. Not even
close. Tour 18 is a cool course but you'll be there all day
unless you're going out in the first few groups. Lantana used
to be a fun course but it's getting hemmed in by houses now.
Texas Star is a terrific layout and completely unencumbered
by development.

Thanks all for the feedback. Looks like I can get onto Cowboys for $75
in the afternoon so will pick that for 1 day.
For the second day - I'm torn between Bridlewood and Tour 18 (Tour 18
will give me a really good deal) - so if people were to choose - is one
much better quality than the other? I know the Tour 18 has a novelty
air to it which may make it more interesting

This is a no-brainer.

I'd choose Tour 18 every time.

Bridlewood may be a terrific golf course. Don't know. Never played it.

But don't dismiss Tour 18 as merely a "novelty." Tour 18's layout stands up
quite nicely as an excellent test of golf. How can it not with all those
holes that mimic famous ones? Never mind the fact that its holes are not
EXACT replicas of the originals. The shot values are very similar in most
cases. It's worth the trip just to play Amen Corner -- Augusta's holes 11,
12 and 13 (which are presented as Tour 18's 16, 17 and 18). Obviously, you
won't see the tall Georgia pines (they won't grow in North Texas) or the
azaleas (which would wilt in the Texas heat). The hole layouts are
rekably similar to the original ones. (And I've walked them both.)

I only played it once, and a long time ago, so my recollection is
fuzzy, but I do remember local knowledge is valuable there.

There are actually a few fairly interesting holes on that course. And quite
a few more not-so-interesting holes.

But what I remember most about it was that the radio station I once worked
at was located almost directly across the street, making it very convenient
for me to sneak in 9 holes after work.

That and the fact that I've never come closer to getting beaned in the head
by a golf ball than I once was (almost) there. It was on the one hole that
has two different greens (the superintendant decides each day which green is
in use). Someone misunderstood and fired one at the wrong green, and I
heard the ball whiz by my ear....prob'ly missed me by no more than a foot or
two...a little too close for comfort.

I played a course over in that area probably about 10 years ago, but
I don't remember the name. I do remember that it didn't have a range
to warm up on. Maybe they added that since then, or perhaps it
was a different course.

Is this the course that
1. Doesn't have a driving range
2. There's a long downhill par 3 where the green is down below the
base of a dam?

The course you're thinking of is Lake Arlington GC in Arlington, TX.

They have a good range...all turf, no mats. I don't remember a par
three below the dam, but maybe Bellomy does. The longest par three is
just over 185 yds, and that's from the tips.

Rental cars can be found fairly cheap.
The all-day rate at Land's End is hard to beat.
If you only have 2 days to play, you might as well
play all day. Some of the best greens in the area,
but it is a little over an hour from Dallas.
Take a map or you will get lost.

You can't go wrong with any that you mentioned although Bear Creek is
my least favorite.

There's also a very good public course; Grapevine, that's better than
it's price indicates.
http://www.ci.grapevine.tx.us/IndividualDepartments/Golf/AbouttheCourse/tabid/271/Default.aspx

Another close, and really pricey one, is Cowboy's...over $100. New
and terrific. Greens fees includes everything plus lunch, unless that
has changed.
http://www.cowboysgolfclub.com/newpage.asp?id=285&page=5844

Any of these should give you a great golf outing. They're all good
venues.
