Subject: Straight golf balls? Do they work?
Save your preaching, I KNOW Correct golf swing mechanics/grip is the
best way to combat hooks & I already am taking lessons. I have 1 hole
on my little exec golf course that kills me every time. At about
220yrds it has a slight dog leg right & a pond. However, my slice is
bigger than the dogleg & I plunk more times than not.If I could get
that shot a little straighter I'de shave strokes. Has anybody used a
so called "straight" golf ball to get a straighter trajectory? If so
what balls do you like.

If they really worked they wouldn't sell them in boxes of 12.

Well I looked @ this mofo hole again today. I hadn't hit my driver too
well today so didn't want to try to power it past the dogleg/pond. I
hit my 5 wood.......about 3 feet too long, PLUNK! Son's a bitch! Took
the drop, hitting 3, hit it fat. GOD I SUCK. Got a 7. I don't think a
golf ball will make the difference. Need to keep practicing, maybe
learn to draw it alittle.

You need to either (a) learn how far you actualy hit your 5W or (b)
learn what "lay up" really means 8^).

Common problem ... you relax because you know you're just laying up ...
because you relax you make your best swing of the day ... the ball goes
20 yards further than normal and you're exactly where you don't want to
be. Always play *way* short of the hazard when you lay up.

Well, you've blamed your poor golf on your mother and then God. Yeah, I'd
work on the draw.

First, you're asking in the wrong group ... 'cause as we all know,
everyone in RSG hits their driver 300+ and dead straight (maybe a little
draw) 8^).

But, on the topic ... not much personal experience as I've pretty much
managed to banish my slice a couple of years ago ... but I've played a
variety of relatively inexpensive balls (Noodle, Nike, Pinnacle), never
noticed much difference in flight, and would be surprised if a ball
could make that much difference. Of course, it'd be pretty easy/cheap to
buy a sleeve or two and give it a go.

OTOH, if you're desparate enough (but not desparate enough to actually
change your swing), then there have been some pretty positive reviews of
anti-slice drivers (big offset + closed face). In particular, I seen
quite a few "thumbs-up" on the Bob Burns No Bananas Driver. YMMV.

I've read that *all* balls were easier to slice in Olden Dayze.
Reading descriptions of new balls, I see how each ball is better than
the other, but usually "long" means "less spin", and "less spin" means
"less likely to slice" and "won't stop as well on the green".

But I haven't noticed that one ball slices less than another for my
game. Slices are much rarer than before - but I haven't gotten good
enough to be consistent enough to notice.

Well, to answer the actual question, the new Topflite distance
balls are straight, and they don't seem to be as hard as they
used to be. I like Pinnacle Exceptions, too.

I play mostly urethane covered balls, but if I'm having a bad
round, I will pull out the surlyn rocks, and they do help keep
the number of lost balls down.

I'm with the guy who says lay up.

Let's say you hit one in the water, drop, hit it on the green and two
putt. That gives you a 5 and a lost ball.

But if you lay up way back off the tee, then hit another lay up to a
nice little wedge distance, and get up and down you make par AND save
a ball.

Is it just that it's not "fun" to lay up?

At 220 yds, it sounds like a 7-iron and a wedge and a putt for birdie to me.
Most 220 yds are three pars. Take advantage of this one.

I could be wrong ... but I read that as the dog leg and pond being 220
from the tee, not the green.

I've been laying up....that's no fun. It's very narrow, maybe 40 yds.
If I dont hit it passed the dogleg , theres not an open shot. Unless
you can just scootch it up there way left, theres no 2nd shot except a
punch out to get in view.

Not answering your question, but if plunk "more times than not" why
don't you lay up?
Have you tried a stronger grip/more closed position?
