Michelle Wie accepted at Stanford:

Hmmm. She's a pro golfer, so she can't play on the golf team.

Anybody know what she plans to study?

Lebron James and probably several other basketball and football players
through endorsements.

Unless you mean only golfers; then I don't know.

Signing bonuses for #1 draft choices might be in that range.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if she stays all the way through. My
understanding of why Tiger left Stanford was that the NCAA had become
impossible to deal with. They were constantly getting on his case for
horrible abuses of the purity of amateur sports such as letting Arnold
Palmer buy him a $15 dinner. Tiger actually had to write Arnie a check
to reimburse him or face sanctions. I'm sure that Earl was getting
plenty of money in 'consulting" fees from IMG, Nike, AMEX, and whoever
else, so I doubt that money was the only factor. She already has the
money, and since she can't play on the team, she won't have to deal
with the NCAA. She'll probably practice with the team though, so she'll
be able to get much of the experience of being on the team.

Michelle will probably have an easier time fitting in practice and
tournament time while in college than in high school The vacations are
typically longer in college, and the amount of time spent in class is a
whole lot less. She'll have a lot more work to do outside of class, but
she can use the daylight hours to practice, and study at night.

Yeah, I'm sure Wie is going to select her major based on how much it
impresses others.

I realized after I typed that. But Dryden completed his law degree at
McGill while playing in the Canadiens organization, including for the
big team. I am not sure if he started the law degree at Cornell or not
- I think he did.

I don't know how you knew these guys. But anyways, I looked them up.
None of them attended college while they were playing professionally.
They attended college after retirement, or in the case of Dryden,
decided to attend college instead of going pro. In all cases, not the
same as turning pro, then starting college while playing
professionally.

I'd be more impressed if she went for a science/engineering major then the

I'm thinking of her interviews I've seen - in the context of an
engineering job interview...

Regardless, I applaud her decision to go to college and take in that
unique 18-21 year old experience. She has the rest of her life to be
pro.

Ken Dryden?

I'm not assuming she's going to finish. But I was shocked that she is
planning on attending college after already being pro for over a year.
Do you know any other athletes who attended college full-time *after*
turning pro?

It ain't about the prize money. Other than Tiger, do you know any athletes
that made $10M before they played their first professional game?

That certainly was a shocker. Well, I got to give to her for not
following people's expectations for her.

> Anybody know what she plans to study?

If I were her, I'd study business. As a athlete/celebrity, there's so
many business opportunities out there, especially after your career.

A schocker? I don't think so. Being accepted to Stanford and
completing an education a two different animals. Woods did not hang
around very long and I doubt that Wie will either.

Well, that surprises me. I thought that after being embarrassed in

golf after HS graduation. Going to Stanford will leave her less time

She's rich. I'm wondering if she's been playing with the men for her
contract with Nike, and isn't that interested in a pro golf career. I
guess we'll find out.
