My sports section headline read, "Tiger roars back within 1 of
Appleby." This after Tiger limped off with back to back bogeys. It
should have read "Applebys triple bogey hands second place to Woods."

Tigers approach has always been to try to play 4 good days of
golf. He's won more than one tournament by leading from the front
and shooting near par. In his mind those shots on Friday count
as just as many strokes as those on Sunday. And they do.
I've never bought into the "he can turn it on" line. He plays
good golf everday and some days those putts drop and some they
don't. He once said that it didn't bother him to see some guy
leading on Thursday because everyone has their best day and
that guy just had his.

But it is strange that he shot basically around par every day,
even on Sunday when the course was receptive to a bit of
charging, but he is focused on last Thursday and Friday.

Yes, I heard him say that. He also said he wasn't
dissapointed with Sunday, he had lost the tournament
with those bogey-bogey finishes. Questionable, since he
was leading the tournament on Sunday and was
outplayed by ZJ on Sunday. Of course he would have
been in much better position without those bogeys, but
he had a chance to win on Sunday but did not play
well enough to do so.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, Thor.

It shows a slight chink in the armour of Tiger Woods' often cited "mental
toughness."

That said, it also seems clear that he was trying right to the very end to
win. So it's not like he "gave up." But it does point out a certain
negativity that may have crept into his thinking. Never a good thing.

On a day when the scoring average was 77 strokes and change, it would be
accurate to say that Tiger's even par round of 72, even with its two closing
bogeys, was the equivalent of "roaring back."

It just didn't feel like it, because this year's Masters appears to be more
like a US Open.

Well according to El Tigre himself the bogey-bogey finish 2 days in a row
cost him the tunamint.

A "gimme" can best be defined as an agreement between
two golfers neither of whom can putt very well.

It didn't, my point being that Tiger did not "roar back" anywhere. To
me "roaring back" would be going birdie, birdie, birdie to cut Applebys
lead, not having Appleby triple bogey #17.

He was one of only three golfers to shoot even par or better on the day,
you know.

Huh? How did Appleby's triple bogey do that?

That would be an even more misleading headline as Tiger would be in second
place even if Appleby had eagled that hole.
