My wife bought me a skycaddie, and I have been "trying it out" In spite of subscribing to membership in skygolf, and downloading several of the "4 star" courses in the area (Hilton Head, SC), I am underwhelmed The manual says it can show up to 400 "targets", such as bunkers, water hazards, etc, displaying distances and carry distances. However, in all the courses I look at, only about 20% of these are shown. I have experimented with the advanced settings, to no avail Is there something I am missing or doing wrong ? TIA JM

I was playing a local course about 3 weeks ago (Stow, MA) and there was a sky caddie person there mapping the course. He had some kind of GPS device with him and a notebook, and mostly he was walking straight down the middle of the fairways. He easily caught up to our 2-some and we let him go through. He didn't seem to be spending much time hunting about bushes or other landks on the holes, but obviously doing something as he was walking the whole course. later in the day, a helicopter zipped over at least 3 fairways. No idea if that was related, but it may have been.

He might have been a ordinary land surveyor remeasuring the course along the line of play. All the modern golf course design and land surveying is being done with GPS. I saw one course under construction where they had a permanent differential GPS station mounted on a post. I can't find photos on the Internet, but I've see the Sky Caddie mapping gizmo and it looks like something from a NASA space walk with a couple of antennas, a backpack, and a laptop computer hanging off a shoulder harness. <mike_0_007@hotmail.com > wrote in message news:1166651131.678672.195590@48g2000cwx.googlegroups.com... >I was playing a local course about 3 weeks ago (Stow, MA) and there was > a sky caddie person there mapping the course. It isn't the island. GPS lands airplanes on the center of runways. GPS systems are only as good as the maps. If you need > 400 targets, then sell the Sky Caddie and take some lessons. This presumes all shots come off perfect. The times I find these kinds of devices the most useful are for extremely bad shots. You know the ones, like the shot from adjacent fairways, the skulled shot that goes 100 yards off the tee on a par 5, the shot that lands on some non-descript piece of land between two retention ponds, that kind of thing. There are no kers there, and new and strange hazards come into play that otherwise don't generally need distance references. Heck, I've seen caddies on TOUR walking off distances because their pro has landed in some strange place that has no references on their yardage book.

Sky Caddie is only as good as the course mapping. It is possible that stuff wasn't mapped because the mapper was lazy or the stuff really doesn't matter. Too much information may be as bad as too little. You really are only looking for a few basic distances. Off the tee, 2nd shot son par 5, and distances to the pin. Aren't corners on doglegs and fairway bunkers part of distances off the tee? It really is very simple. Distances off tees to doglegs, carrying or avoiding fairway bunkers, and driving through the fairway. Second shots on 5s. To the pin on 3s, second shots on 4s, and third shots on 5s. If you need 400 targets, then sell the Sky Caddie and take some lessons. Thanks for your replies I have tried several courses, all of which Skygolf.com has rated as "4-star", including Harbourtown, and they are all missing critical info - like how far to reach/carry a fairway bunker or advise you of a "hidden" water hazard Since I already have a Bushnell rangefinder, that is more accurate than the Skycaddie, if I am not doing something wrong, I will return the Skycaddie Thanks again "A Brick in the Wall" <NoSpam@NoThanks.com > wrote in message news:45884741_3@newsfeed.slurp.net... > > "sfb" <sfb@spam.net> wrote in message > news:KNmdnaIbJbq2qRXYnZ2dnUVZ_sC3nZ2d@comcast.com... >> Aren't corners on doglegs and fairway bunkers part of distances off the >> tee? >> >> It really is very simple. But I've found that the kers on the adjoining fairways aren't much help.
