IMO, if you can't theorhetically reach all of the par 4s in two shots, you're playing the wrong tee boxes.

That doesn't completely explain it though. The first hole at my home course is a dogleg left, and the 9th runs in the other direction to the right. It's rare that I approach the 9th tee without seeing someone zoom off the first tee in a cart headed for the far left side of the 9th fairway, and sometimes it turns out they've lost it OB over there -- at least 75 yards right of where they were probably aiming. I've been nearly hit by shots up near that green that were 60 degrees right of target off the first tee. (I'm not sure why it always seems those wild shots are hit by people driving carts and not by the ones walking. Maybe just that more folks ride than walk or maybe there's some correlation here that the walkers are more likely to be regular players who don't need a lot of warmup time). Maybe these guys just need to bury the driver for the first 3 holes (Number 2 is a similar hole and indeed people often go WAY right, and number 3 is a straight par 5 with hazards and OB on both sides) until they are really ready to hit it, but I'll bet that if these guys are playing by the rules they lose at least half a dozen strokes in the first 3 holes because of bad driving. -- Warren Montgomery (wamontgomery@att.net) http://home.att.net/~wamontgomery

I suspect that the real solution, the real way to take 10 strokes off your game in 10 seconds, would be to merely decide to play from the appropriate tee box. If you feel you need a longer club, but can't hit a longer club, aren't you playing the wrong tees?

After playing last Sunday, I think more people should adopt the penalty time rule -- any club in your bag that hits a shot that goes seriously off line (like through the adjoining fairway) gets stuck back head down and has to sit out the next 3 rounds. After a few holes you will be down to clubs you can actually hit. Not only will this save you OBs, but it's a lot less stressful not havin to chase balls in some other fairway and I suspect all of your shots will be better as a result. -- Warren Montgomery (wamontgomery@att.net) http://home.att.net/~wamontgomery

I'm actually pretty happy now with no woods in the bag, I've been playing with 1 and 3 irons off the tee. I still haven't run into a course where I play that I ever NEED a D/3W/5W. And I've had better scores this year than ever before (with a lot of personal bests!)

My driver is probably the most consistent club in my bag and my fairway woods are the worst. There are par 4's (and a par 5) where I hit 3W or 5W off the tee, but it is a distance control consideration instead of an accuracy thing. I would admit that my 5W is more accurate than my driver, but I'm not so sure about the 3W. I would guess that only maybe 15-20% of the guys that I play with (handicaps ranging from low singles to mid 20's) would benefit from hitting a bunch fewer drivers than they usually do. dave
