Any of you out there? Wife is going to join me at a conference and we
hope to be scuffing up the turf your direction for September
23-4-and-5. We'll prolly stay around Park City. Where should we be
teeing it up for reasonably-priced golf? I'm a single-digit (see last
week's post-orama for whatever the heck "single digit" means) and Wife
is a quickly improving beginner.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks to all who gave me some pearls (some of you off RSG). Looks
like we're going to hit Bountiful, Soldier Hollow and the Wasatch
Mountain complexes. Two-a-days if we can get 'em in. (lu-HUV those
low greens fees!)

I'll check in with course reports in a couple of weeks.

Thanks again, Gang.

New in 2004. It's on our play list. And it looks *scary*.

Ohhh, duggie. I just got back from a week's golf trip in Midway, Utah in
the Heber Valley (last week in July). Scary is right!!

We played the Soldier Hollow Silver and Gold courses, as well as Wasatch
Mountain State Park Mountain course. By the way, the value on all of
these courses is terrific. We didn't pay more than $39 for any round,
and some of them were on the weekend. We laughed when we heard the
locals complaining about the prices.

First of all, it is absolutely gorgeous out there. Grand views, dry
heat, great value, and beautiful golf courses in great condition. Some
fabulous upscale restaurants, if you're into that kind of thing.

But back to the golf. We played Soldier Hollow Silver first. It was the
tamer of the two. Both courses are very linksy in design. The silver has
less elevation. My buddy and I got to the first tee a little late and
made the mistake of not practicing putting. Our first putts were off the
green! They were slicker than kitty sh*t. We did find out later that
they were prepping the course for a PGA qualifier and that the greens
were stimping at 11, and they wanted to have them at 11.5-12 in 5 days.
Not sure if you have played a true mountain course, but even though we
got the speed of the greens eventually, reading the breaks was a bear.
You had to figure out which mountain or slope affected the putt. Very
challenging!

The Gold course is extremely challenging, longer, and has both a links
and mountain feel, and some holes with blind shots. Absolutely fabulous
views. These greens were very quick and true (if you got the read). We
played the Silver on a Wednesday and the Gold on a Saturday. Pace of
play was very reasonable when we were there. I preferred the Gold, my
friend preferred the Silver, probably because I am a longer hitter.

The Wasatch Mountain course is quite scenic and in great condition as
well. We played there on a Friday. We probably would have enjoyed it
more if it wasn't a 5 1/2 hour round. Argh! The locals told us that the
summer is their high time for golf and it is like that every weekend. I
was there two years ago around this time, however, and the pace was fine.

Have a great time- I am hoping not too many people find out about Midway
and the Heber Valley because it is still one of those not-yet-popular
golfing gems (except with the locals, of course).

At least we'd have room to stash the clubs in the back of the little
red pick-up. :-)

The only prob with RSG-OH is that I'm down there the week *after*.
(insert growling bitchy noises here...) Radar for '07 is already
dialed in.

Debbie mentioned that we aught to be able to get on easy on Sundays
since 95% of the population will be tied up most of the day with other
stuff. Bob; Thanks for the info. Mountain Dell is on our short list,
so, I'll take a closer look based upon your comments.

Reports to follow...

I've only played in UT at the course by the airport. It ain't bad if
you don't mind planes on-approach flying over every 30 seconds.

I'm sure bill-o could drop you off on the way by. He'll drive anywhere
for a game.

Doesn't look like any SLC folks are replying ... I've never played there but
my daughter did during her college career so, I've walked a couple of
courses ... I have some pictures of these courses, if you're interested post
your e-mail address. I don't know prices, sorry, but there might be
something if you follow the links below.

Only one I'd recommend is Bountiful Ridge. Pretty nice, hilly ... I think
it's public(?). Big greens, so GIR is high as are three putts! Easy to
find, just south of the LDS temple in Bountiful. Your wife might struggle
here. http://www.bountifulutah.gov/golf/index.asp

There's a course down by the SLC airport ... Wingpointe. It's just so so.

In between Park City and SLC is a goat track called Mountain Dell. Two
courses there ... I'd avoid that too. Disclaimer on that advice is that the
weather was bad when we were there ... snowed out the second day!

I saw that course as I flew in for a connecting flight to RSG NW. It
looked pretty nice from 10,000 feet. :-)
