Hey gang,

I noticed that after using the driver in cold weather there is a rattle in
the head.

Sounds like a baby rattle. Something loose inside.

Club is 8 months old and bought brand new from a Pga Tour superstore.

It does not rattle after being in the bag for a hole.

Today in warmer weather it did not rattle at all.

Last week in colder weather it rattled after every drive. Sometimes after
being the bag for hole it would not rattle until after I hit a ball off the
tee.

Any ideas?

Worth taking back?

Otto

Callaway 'swingweight' their clubs after assembly in an automatic
process that introduces a metered amount of semi-fluid weighting
material (hot melt mix) into the head, via a small plug-hole that you
will find in the sole of the club. Look for the small black plug! The
weighting material remains plastic inside the clubhead. Either this
weighting material has come adrift, or there is possibly a small amount
of metal swarf broken free from the interior surface of the clubhead
that is intermittently being caught-up in the plastic mix. Just explain
the problem to the store, or whoever, and they should recognise this as
a fairly common problem....you don't need to demonstrate it!

Either take it into the store and have them send it to Callaway, who
will surely fix the problem...or take it to a clubmaker who will
introduce some 'rattle stop' glue via the plughole and this should
effectively capture the offending rattle. Some clubmakers will use a
carbite tipped small drill to actually drill a hole into the sole of
other clubs...through which they can introduce the 'rattle stop'...there
is nothing unusual about this.

cheers

The conventional wisdom is that this is a weld bead that has broken off
inside the head, and it is apparently not an unheard of problem. Definitely
send it back. Callaway will almost certainly make it right. The
temperature dependence is also not unheard-of, although that makes about 0
sense to me...

I've got an email into Callaway customer service. I'll keep ya posted on the
response.

What in the world is a weld bead?

Call Callaway and tell them about it.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet that they will offer to swap it for a brand
new one...at no charge.

Callaway's customer service is second-to-none.

It's a glueball inside. There is sticky stuff on the inside surfaces of
the head, and when it gets cold enough the glueball(s) come loose and
rattle around. It will subside when it's warmer.

Is the glueball anything to be concerned about?

Is the head going to fly off?

Where does the glueball come from?

Yes Moi Moi has it just right although the epoxy wouldn't warm up
enough not to be brittle in warmer weather. The club's under guarentee.
Send it back or take it to your nearest Callaway dealer.

I have had teh same and that rattle will eventually drive you up the
pole.

I would think that you'd want to get it fixed. Call Callaway or take
it back to your local shop. I doubt they'd have any problem with
replacing it.

It didn't take long after I had such a rattle for my head to go
flying.

The problem I am having is the rattle is not always present.

On Friday when it was chillier out, it rattled after every drive.

On Sat, with a bit warmer temps, I could not get it to rattle one single
time during the entire round.

Of course, you know when I get it to the shop it won't rattle.

My guess is that it's one or more epoxy blobs that have become detached.
Although why it's intermittant is rather odd. Maybe when it's cold, the
pieces become brittle enough to make a noise or something, who knows.
If it is that, though, as Howard mentioned, it could indicate that the
head to shaft bond is not all it should be. I agree that a high dollar
driver like this should be silent, though :)
