Subject: Putter Cut Down Stats
I thought I'd give an update after cutting my putter down on August
3rd. I figure I have enough rounds under my belt to give some good
stats:

For the record, the "before" stats are from June and July, "after"
status are from August Sept. I figure those would give the best
comparision with similar course conditions:

Before:
26 rounds
31.81 putts/ rnd
Ave Differential: 7.05 (handicap of 4.8)
GIR %: 45%
Up/Down%: 39%
3 putts: 7.82%
2 putts: 61.93%
1 putts: 29.42%

After:
20 rounds
31.60 putts/rnd
Ave Differential: 6.20 (handicap of 4.2)
GIR %: 45%
Up/Down%: 41%
3 putts. 7.22%
2 putts: 61.94%
1 putt: 30%

I'm not a statistician, so I don't know if .2 strokes is enough
correlation. Probably not. Though I do feel a lot more comfortable
over the ball.

It's clear I need to get rid of the 3 putts, averaging about 1.5 3
jacks a round. That would put me in the 3 index range (although one
might argue that the 3 putts are non-existant for the top rounds that
round for my handicap).

One of the interesting stats is that I 3 putt more par 5s than par 4s
or par 3s (about 10% to 7%), even though I birdie par 5s twice as
often, 15% compared to 5% of the holes I play. Not sure what that
means. Perhaps I really give it a run on the first putt, thinking that
I "need" to birdie the par 5.

I agree with that.

Good point. I'll have to pivot it and see. I don't think I reach that
many in two. I'm a fairly conservative player, and the tee boxes I
play, there are few that are under 520 yards, which is probably my max
as far as getting home in two.

FWIW, I 3 putt more on par 3's and 4's vs. par 5's (11% vs. 9%). In my case
the reason is pretty clear. My average first putt length on par 5's is 18'
vs. 20' on par 4's and 22' on par 3's. Or expressed another way on par 5's
13% of my first putts are 35' or longer. That number is 17% on par 4's and
20% on par 3's.

If I was looking at a lot of eagle putts on par 5's things would probably
look a lot different. But I would guess that the differences that you are
seeing are related to differences in the putts that you face.

I have a minor in statistics, Larry--but before everyone asks, it wasn't
from an Ivy League college :)--and though I don't have the raw data,
just looking at it tells me there's very little difference in your
putting statistics. So little, in fact, that the difference could be
due to one or two lucky or bad days.

The difference of .21 putts per round is one putt every five
rounds--which means you could have gotten lucky or unlucky four times to
make that difference.

Further, your up-and-down percentage is slightly higher in the later
rounds, which could either mean you had a couple of lucky chips that got
you up and down more, or perhaps it was the putter. Hard to say.

If I were to give an opinion, I'd say there's no signficant difference
between the two.

How many par 5's do you reach in two, but at a bad spot on the green,
hard to get down in two? I'd want to know if the 3-putts were for pars
or worse.

Good playing regardless, Larry.
