The subtitle of this topic is "Dave, tell me again just exactly how long it took you to figure this out for yourself??" I'm finicky about golf balls and, in particular, how they react on short pitch shots. I like balls that will (for me) check up pretty strongly on (for example) LW'es or SW'es that carry 20'ish yards (or less - particularly the LW). Not many balls out there 'work for me' given that criteria - a few that have met that criteria are: * Strata Tour Ultimate (great ball but had the durability of wet tissue paper) * 2002/3 vintage Pro V1's (occasionally too spinney on full SW/LW shots) * Callaway HX Red and HX Blue (Blue was a bit short and almost too spinney across the board). I really liked the Red. * Current vintage Pro V1 Among the balls that didn't make the cut was the Pro V1x. I didn't find any of these balls to be particularly short or long, other than maybe the HX Blue. I recently changed back to the Pro V1 and have been less than enthralled with its response off the tee - something that I'm not usually so picky about and something that I don't recall objecting to back in 2002/3. I had a handful of Pro V1x'es laying around and decided to give them a try on the course this week. My impression of these balls for quite some time was that I just don't have the swingspeed to hit them longer than the Pro V1, etc. My driver SS is somewhere in the high 90's and a 250 yard drive on flat/watered fairways is a very good, but not unheard of, drive for me. And other than a barely noticeable loss of yardage with the HX Blue, I had never noticed a distance change when switching balls. I was close to astounded at some of the drives that I was hitting on Wednesday. It was a reasonable day for hitting long balls (been relatively dry and temps were high 70's - no wind), but nothing special. I can derive a surprising amount of information from the relatively small amount of data that I collect on the course. Simply stated I had the longest driving day (technically it was tied with my longest driving day) that I have recorded in the last 170 rounds (when I started this particular data collection methodology. My average drive length on holes that I deem 'driving comparison holes' was 20 yards longer than 'normal' for me. While this was a good ballstriking day for me, I only get to '10 yards longer than normal' about 10% of my rounds. One round hardly proves anything, but it sure looks like I might well be getting 10+ extra yards out of the Pro V1x vs. the other balls that I've played regularly. So I'll be a Pro V1x user for a while. It will definitely change my play around the greens as this ball (for me) does not act like either the HX Red or Pro V1 on shorter pitch shots hit with a SW or LW. dave

Some days they are particularly hot...others they don't fly at all well.....OTOH the Pro V1x's display similar characteristics but a little further up the 'hot' scale. I sense that ambient conditions are quite critical...warm dry days thay all fly well yet anything below about 15°C (59°F), and humid, they are quite variable. I understand that they are are all basically the same ball with a 'cut-off' compression/elasticity test in production dividing the two types. I could be wrong there, it is only hearsay. The range of quality is quite wide and I have found that one sleeve of Pro V1's can be particularly 'hot' compared with another bought on quite a different occasion, which must have been at the bottom end of the continuum. Just my opinion, but I wonder whether others have found the same thing. cheers david

I just don't remember the exact model. It didn't have the kind of around the green performance that I like. But then again neither does the V1x, which I'm playing right now :-) dave
