Any recommendations for Orlando area? I thought the Phoenix area had a lot
of courses. We got nothin' on Florida. I will be there for a week in early
June, and I don't mind driving a bit to a nice course. I was thinking about
staying a night at Arnold's place so I could play Bay Hill, but they told me
they are aerating the course late May - early June. Can't afford Sawgrass.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Caution, rounds there tend more towards the 5 hour length. I've
stopped
playing there because of the pace of play.

As you have noted, you can't through rock in Orlando without it
landing
at a golf course. It is always hard to make recommendations without
knowing folks sensetivity to price and quality (or lack thereof).
Metrowest
usually gets good reviews, although some don't like its wide open
"resort
course" nature. They do maintain the place well and it has a good
pace of
play (4 - 4.25 typically). It has a sister course, Falcons Fire,
which is
nice, although I like MW better. Stoneybrook West (out near OCN) also
is a nice layout. Celebration's course also gets very high marks, but
I've never played that course. If you can cough up the greens fees,
you
might try to play the Magnolia course at Disney, only because it is
the one the pros play during the Disney Classic at the end of the
year.
It's a nice layout, although again it bends a bit towards the "resort
course"
kind of layout.

Don't know how much golf you're planning on playing, but some out
of towners who come frequently clued me in on one way of cutting
costs. Falcon's Fire and Metrowest are both owned by the same
firm. They have a "loyalty club" which costs $189 to join, but then
your first round is free. After that, each round costs you about $40.
You also get a coupon for 4 $25 rounds (one in each season).

So if you're planning on playing alot of rounds, and are willing to
do
them at those two courses, it might save ya a couple of bucks.

We're staying at the Gaylord Palms, which is just down the road from
Falcon's Fire. We might try and get a late afternoon round in there. Thanks.

Disney has a complex of 5 courses as I recall, typically maintained in
pretty good condition. I played the Osprey Ridge course about 8 years
ago in a corporate outing. It's a Fazio layout, sporty and challenging
but with a complement of tee choices to suit your game. My only
experience with golf in/near Orlando. Summertime should be off-season
rates? Be prepared for withering humidity.

There are a good 30 courses or more within a few miles of "Orlando"
(euphemism for central Florida, running roughly twenty miles across and
twenty miles deep: Orlando itself is a small part of the area comprising
many cities). A google search will come up not only with descriptions but
the oppy to book tee times. A phone call to the pro shop might enable you
to filter out courses not in the best of shape or being aerated, or
whatever...and to get a sense of how high end it is. Many have twi-light
rates (after one or two) and it is light, of course, until almost 8 pm now.

I use tripadvisor.com every time I plan a trip to another town. it has been
good to me. find orlando then keyword search the forums and most liekly a
local or two will have posted asnwers to other's questions about golf in the
area. if not, then just post a message there...

I recommend Orange County National. They have two very good courses.
It is inexpensive to stay there as well.

I had seen a positive review of the courses, but I didn't know there was a
hotel there as well. I checked it out and it looks like it is very
reasonable, especially to "stay and play". Thanks!

Summer when days are warm and rain plentiful is when Florida golf courses do
the heavy maintenance like aeration so the chances of finding a "clean"
course are slim approaching none.
