Well, Hootie did it... he built a demolition derby track where
there used to be a great golf course. I think it's fair to assume
we won't be seeing any 30's on the closing nine on Sunday, don't
you? Like 1986 was any fun to watch anyway. Right.

Anyway, I know Hootie left you this disaster, and even though
you're El Hombre del Nacional now (or something like that, I
actually don't speak Spanish), you can't just bring in the bull-
dozers Monday and have everything he did undone. And even if you
could, you probably wouldn't want to. The lengthening of the
course was sadly necessary, I admit.

But for the love of all that's holy on this Easter weekend, can
you please mow the entire course next year? And maybe remove a
few dozen trees while you're at it? I know you don't want to see
-20 win it every year, but good lord, Tiger Woods is +3 at the
halfway point. This isn't the US Open and you aren't the USGA.
Are you? No, I'm pretty sure you're not. I miss the Masters
that offered the full gamut of scores. This deal where the best
golfers in the world hang on for dear life to make pars is
supposed to happen on Father's Day, not Easter. Along with the
Daylight Savings Time change, this is really wrecking my internal
calendar. Please help.

If I may be of any assistance to you in softening the setup,
please don't hesitate to ask. I'll even fly to Augusta at my
own expense to play the course a few times if I must. I just
love the game that much.

Best regards,

No, that would be you. I sell mine at the barbershop.

I'd like the to see the winner finish at +1 on Sunday.

Sunday forecast temp for 8am in Augusta--26 degrees F. Winds peaking at 9mph
at 2 pm.

Winds peak on Sat from 2-5 Pm-- 13 Mph.

I like to see the course play tough.

The par 5s still seem to short--too many eagle putts.

They can make it possible, like when Phil lit up the back nine a few
years ago (or was it last year?), just by placing a few easier pin
positions. I suspect they'll do that with the scores high and the
greens so brutal.

P.S. Can you make sure that Annika1980 is on the permanent list to
get practice round tickets?

Its important to preserve the integrity of the challenge of the course
as it was originally designed. Unfortunately, advances in equipment,
principally drivers that go 40 yards further AND straighter, and
deeper
square iron grooves, have forced golf courses to make courses tighter
and longer to maintain the same difficulty.

There is nothing wrong with holding a major tournament on a par
72 course and having even par be a very competitive score.

As to the USGA and the US Open, we have hope that they too
will create a major tournament to rival the Master's. Someday.

-PA

PS. Tiger may be +3, but there are a number of great young players a
bit under par.
