At the range today I heard the ugliest sounds that I've ever heard - at least sounds related to the contact of a golf club and a golf ball. Imagine putting a range ball in a freezer overnight, the ball splits open a bit, and then you give it to John Daly to hit (ball still frozen) with the loudest titanium driver that you can fine. It was a truly sick sound. I'm assuming that it was the new Nike Square driver as it was square (as best as I could tell from 30' away) and yellow on the bottom. If it hit the ball great and I felt like spending that much on a new golf club, I guess I'd play it. But this (to me) was a very displeasing sound. dave

Then the maker put some sort of noise baffling material in the head and it is now ked the SV3. Similar kings and sole is yellow color same as the Nike square. I understand Callaway got it figured out with their new square driver. By the way, I added about 10-20 yds to my drives using the Nike clone square head SV3. Integra also has their SooLong head out now as well as their I-Wood head. The whole sales pitch on these drivers: straighter.......

[snip] Was at Edwin's on Saturday getting something else. It was a rainy day or I would have picked another day. Long line of guys trying it out. I've been on alot of ranges, and I've heard alot of drivers hittin' balls. I even lived through the transition from wood to metal. But this is the first time I've "jumped" when I heard a driver hit a ball. CEO of Taylor Made said this whole square driver thing will last about as long as the composite driver head. From listening to the "buzz" at Edwin's, I'd guess he's right.

Maybe if I had been indoors my reaction would have been different. But I would not describe the sound that I heard as overwhelmingly loud vs. other drivers. Louder than average for sure, but that wasn't my reaction. My reaction was "that is a sickening sound". dave

The guy working at Dick's told me that when KJ Choi used it (and won) last year, golfers as much as three holes away were distracted and startled by the gunshot-like sound. It was way too heavy for me - heavy shaft - heavy head. Even with a regular flex I felt like I was swinging a shovel. Might be good for a larger guy - I'm 5'9" and 160, but the Cobra F Speed with the Aldila NV shaft is a lot better fit for me.
