Subject: New Low for TGC
Unlike many here, I generally like the Golf Channel. I enjoy watching
the highlights of previous majors, I enjoy the Golf Central news show,
and I enjoy watching some of the Euro Tour events. More importantly,
being something of an electronics whiz, I have located the button on
my remote that allows me to change the channel when an infomercial or
BB comes on.

But today they have pissed me off. They are showing the top 15 shots
of the last 15 years on the PGA tour. Obviously, nobody is going to
agree with all 15 of their choices, let alone the ranking, but it's
still fun to watch those shots. Unfortunately, there is no point in
recording it, and it is very annoying to watch, because they have done
the unthinkable.

Apparently the Mercedes starts in a bit under three days. It will
have a disappointing field, with something like only 8 of the top 20
players, but it's the first event of TGC's new PGA contract, and I
don't blame them for hyping it beyond its true value. But for God's
sake, they have put up a large bug in the upper right corner of the
screen that is counting down the seconds to when the coverage starts.
They do not show this occasionally, they have it up there all the
time, and will apparently keep it there until Appleby (or whoever)
tees off on Thursday. The only time it goes away is during
commercials. Annoying the viewers is OK; annoying the sponsors is a
no-no.

What a great start to 2007.

Dude, if you're actually recording The Golf Channel, it's time to
consider your life force and it's place in the universe.

Or just pull down your pant's and show us your pussy.

I sent 'em "feedback" through their Contact form.
I chose "programming" as the category.
Encouraging all RSGers to do likewise,

...and when they review all of those messages, 1 day, 22 hours, 16
minutes from now, they'll act swiftly to correct the problem, I'm sure.

It is moderately irritating but not as bad as that cable channel (Fox??)
that has those damned little cartoons that come out of the right hand lower
corner without warning. Nothing against Kyra Sedgewick, but I get tired of
seeing her come bounding out of the screen shining a flashlight at me.

Unthinkable? It's a commercial network, promoting its newly won
contract to show early round coverage of PGA events. Since all of TGC's
revenue is derived from commercial sources, for ads, placements,
infomercials, etc. one would be astonished if the didn't promote the
daylights out of it. They'll want their first effort to have the biggest
possible audience, so they'll pull out even more "unthinkable" tricks in
the coming days.

Well, sure. I have no problem with them promoting it. I have no
problem with their commercials acting like the Mercedes is a major,
and that their coverage team would eat Murrow's and Cronkite's lunch.
I wouldn't have much of a problem, though I find it annoying when
other channels do it, if they had a couple-second logo pop up during
the shows. But I've never before seen a channel run a constant,
24-hour a day commercial that obscures something like 10% of the
screen during feature programming, making it unrecordable and almost
unwatchable. The only good thing is that as I watch, the timer is
firmly plastered right square over Steve Sand's face.

Yep. Just looked. That's really bad. A lower corner where nothing
important happens would be ok I guess, but this thing just dominates the
screen. Bet the show producers had some great fights over this, someone
lost at TGC, and so did all their viewers.
