Subject: New Ball brands
Around here, I've seen lots of pushing of the Nike Juice (is that the
same as the Mojo). I haven't tried them yet.

But I bought some Crystal Pro-3PC and tried them out today. I just
got to the course when a buddy called me over to play with him, so I
wasn't warmed up. I lost two balls in the first two holes before
deciding to play for a while with a Maxfli that I found - just until I
lost it. Trouble is, I played pretty well after that, so I never did
put it away.

At any rate, I didn't get any feel of that ball, the way I do with
normal Volvik Crystal balls. I did have one pretty nice wedge shot
which didn't roll any. I'm not good enough to notice much different
between balls with chips, and I adjust with putts after I find out
what the grass is like anyway.

What other experiences have people had with new ball brands?

Because Consumer Reports rated them very high and the fact that they are
very cheap, I bought a dozen Nike Power Distance SuperSoft balls Tuesday. I
played around with them some in the chipping area yesterday. Here are my
impressions.

1) They will act pretty much like Pro V1x'es on longer pitch shots.

2) It seemed to me like they quit biting sooner than Pro V1x'es. With a V1x
I can get a bit of that 'zzzzzt' sound when the ball hits the green from
10-15 yards (using a LW). That ability seems to go away with the Powersoft
in the 20 yard range. If I were using this ball regularly I'd probably hit
more slightly open face LW pitches than I do right now. Not a big deal, BTW.

3) These balls are very soft - softer than the V1x for sure and a bit softer
than the Pro V1 as well. Really soft off the putterface (if that is what you
like). My putting preference is for whatever I've been practicing with.

I'm going to play tomorrow and will be giving these a try. My sense of
things is that they will not be as long as the V1x, but I'll post my
impression after the round tomorrow (assuming the thunderstorms stay away).

Went out today with the Powersoft. But a huge front was coming through and I
only played 1.5 holes with it (driving rain drove us off the course) so
don't really have much to offer here other than to say that it felt pretty
"unexciting" off the driver.

When/if I actually get this ball on the course I'll post my impressions.

My teaching pro was quite impressed with the Nike Powersoft. It is a
two-piece, low compression ball that (from his perspective) spins as well as
the Pro V1x. I have not yet tried it, FWIW.

ps. I understand that there was some kind of golf ball review somewhere and
this ball came out 'on top' (whatever that might mean). Does anyone have a
link or pointer to this? Thanks.

Howard, I too am in the same situation. I can't find a good feeling ball
since the older Maxfli MD 90's. The Nike Powersoft (rated number 2, were
unipressive and not really long). The closest I've found to what I like is
the Callaway HT Tour and too a degree, the Callaway Hot,(which is huge off
the tee). I have a good friend who is a club pro and gets me all the Nike's
I want (he's under contract with them), The Nike one's feel horrible,
another distance ball (not the powersoft) felt better, but still not really
that good.

Some of the best feeling balls I have ever played are Precept U-tri Tours.
I can only find them at Target, and Bridgestone doesn't advertise them.
From that, I conclude that they are going away soon. That sucks, because
they are the only 3-piece urethane cover balls that are priced in a range
that makes any sense to me ($22 / dozen). I like urethane covers.. All the
golf balls I really like have them. Unfortunately, almost all of them cost
too much.

Bridgestone has a 2-piece with urethane (e5's) that is reasonably priced
($25 / dozen). That might be my next try (after I work through the
two-dozen Strata Professionals I bought at $12/doz. Best bargain ever, but
not my favorite golf ball [no urethane] ).

The Nike Power Distance Supersoft placed second to the Nike One Black
in a Consumer Reports test. Here is the link to the results:

Interesting - while I am not a subscriber so can't see the details, I'm not
so surprised now that a two-piece ball and a high end ball came out with
similar 'ratings'. Their 'spin' category was (apparently) full 8i's while
(in my experience) the high end balls really separate themselves when it
comes to spin on partial wedge shots.

I was also surprised to see the Pro V1 rated as having better distance vs.
the V1x. That certainly isn't my experience, but I suppose for some swings
(probably lower SS's needing more spin) that might be the case.
